Fifty six years after performing together in a group that went nowhere, The Rising Sons, Taj Majal and Ry Cooder are reunited as a thing. They appeared together on stage once in 2014, the only time together in all those years. They seem pumped in the interview.

New album coming out. Raw Roots here we come?

Cue Peaches and Herb, "We both are so excited/Cause we're reunited."

Yep! Already tried to get it once, but the store clerk said it hadn't been released yet. I'll try again soon. Meanwhile, been listening to Ry's Prodigal Son. Great stuff!

I've seen Taj live a lot, beginning in 1969. But I've never caught a Cooder.

By golly, it’s been quite some time since I’ve taken Ry’s 1978 “Jazz” for a spin - such a fine album. Thanks for planting the thought!

The last time I probably heard any fresh Ry was his playing Ralph Macchio's parts in the movie Crossroads.

Looking forward to this. Thanks for the heads up.
wait what? That was Ry Cooder? I thought Vie had done all the guitar parts for the whole movie. That's great to know, the slide guitar is tops in that movie. I really dug that movie too.

Yeah, Ry did the entire soundtrack, except for Vai doing his own part. There was one other guitarist involved as well, I forget who.

I like that record too -- especially the arrangements of Bix Beiderbeck's piano pieces, like "In a Mist."

But Ry disowns that record today.

In the guitar duel section, all of the guitar after Ralph Macchio took off his slide was Steve Vai. Arlen Roth was involved, but I think he only worked with Ralph Macchio to make him look like he was really playing the guitar. The original plan for the guitar duel was that it would be all slide guitar, with Ry Cooder playing Jack Butler and Arlen Roth dubbing Eugene's parts, but director Walter Hill decided to go with a different approach. Keith Richards, Frank Zappa and Stevie Ray Vaughan were apparently all considered  In addition, Eugene's classical playing at the start of the film was dubbed by William Kanengiser.
