Composer and performer traversed numerous phases of jazz history, and fused his playing with the likes of Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell and Carlos Santana

Oh wow. That's tough. I'm familiar with him for all his work with Joni Mitchell. What an amazing talent! 89 is a pretty good run, especially for a musician. RIP Mr. Shorter....

The stuff he did with Miles Davis during MIles' electric period is probably my favorite.

I got a kick out of this quote: “We weren’t like consciously saying, ‘Oh, that sounds like some of that stuff in science fiction movies,’ but I think, subconsciously . . . it was sort of like that. . . . “[Charlie] Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk . . . they took the place of Captain Marvel.”

What a brilliant musician and composer he was. I first saw Wayne S. with Miles Davis, in the fall of '68. I was quickly becoming a real jazz fan, and that experience was major push deeper into the music. He will be missed forever.
