I read that musician and producer Steve Abini died last night. During the era that formed my musical aesthetics, Steve Albini was a standout and iconic figure.

For those who don't know about him, he was prominent in the Midwest music scene in Chicago playing drums in bands Big Black and Shellac. He's probably most known for producing Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey, The Breeders, Slint, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and a ton of other bands. I feel he was the embodiment of the post-punk DIY approach and alternative music attitude of the 80s and 90s, typified by making records and music on your own terms and releasing through independent labels. So sad that he passed so young.

Sad at 61. Amazing body of work. But I never thought he was a good fit for the Page&Plant album Walking into Clarksdale. Too much of a garage band sound for my tastes regarding those two. The mainly did full band one takes, and I like my Page “guitar army” approach much more.

The standouts for me that he produced are the Pixies Surfer Rosa, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me, and the early Jesus Lizard records.
