Re: Remembe this" Old hippy song.

I'm a Nam Vet turned 61 today and I ain't changed my lifestyle either; a grouchy old biker bas***d (GOBB for short) with uncanny 12 ounce curl abilities; a passion for redheads, Harley Davidsons, Texas grit, swing, rockabilly, and blues. As well as still living with the dream of one day being a decent guitar player. My friends indulge me and allow me to play that song BTW. :)

Yet, even though I don't smoke or do drugs (anymore) I certainly don't (won't, refuse to) "jog around" nor have I planted "a little garden in the backyard by the fence".

With the possibility that a lifestyle change (given my age) may soon be forced upon me and my wonderful redhead, we're heading out in a couple of weeks on the motorcycle hoping to cover about 5K miles while we still can. It IS starting to hurt a bit. :?

Still a great song!!! Thanks for the reminder.

Peace

rock on, bikerdoc! It's unfortunate how our bodies ultimately rebel against rebellion. :)

Happy Birthday Doc. I've got a little 18' Toyota motorhome which is about half your age, and I'm goin' to be spending a little travel time in it this summer/fall too. Why not? and if not now...when? The smartest thing I ever heard a Doctor say was..the biggest health problem that people have is hardening of the attitudes.
I never went to Vietnam, being a Canadian, but lived thru those uncertain times, and there were a lot of changes during that time. and one thing that never got done at the time, one thing that was never said, or heard enough is 'Thank you' so.....from the kid who occupied this body at the time...Thanks Doc. I do Old Hippy in almost every performance. In venues(especially small ones) where I can see the audience up close I watch the reaction of those men of Vietnam service age. Some just lean back and listen, some smile and look like they are remembering old times, some close their eyes and I can tell they are taken to a different place in memories.
At "they shipped him off to Vietnam on his senior trip" I can always tell who made the trip.
Depending on the crowd that song will often quiet the place down and couples that haven't danced all night will be out on the floor.
Don't do it too fast, slower than the Bellamy Brothers by about 10-15 bpm works best for me and then leave chord measures between phrases, gives the listener time to mull the lyrics over.

edit to add: I didn't serve myself just getting out of high school as it ended but I had a brother of sorts who did and clued me in on how it was over there and how the guys felt when they got back home.

This is what he does now

W O W ! The man has the heart of an artist, and the hands of an artisan. Great stuff. A keen observer of nature, for sure. Steffan

I won't justifiably be able to play that song until the November of 2033... but even then I still can't say I was at woodstock :(
But I will be able to say that when all the other kids were out getting drunk and to blaring rap music, I was cranking out airplane covers with my buddy on our guilds

He's currently mounting a piece locally now that is a life sized Bronc rider. I'll see if I can find a picture of it and get it up.

Hi Bing; if I may ask ... what is a 'brother of sorts'? I have two brothers and when I am oinked with them, I might refer to them that way but somehow I don't think that's what you meant; close friend? John

He is not my brother by blood. When he returned from the service he went to work for my family on the ranch ( I was about 12)and was with us until I returned from from college in the mid seventies. One of those folks who helps you grow up to be who you are. Told me about it when I screwed up. Stood up for me at our wedding. One of the best friends my old man had and I still have.

When he would come to work on the winter mornings there would be a grizzly in wax on the dashboard of the feed truck. By the time we finished feeding the wax would be slumped down from the heat of the defroster and he would ball it up and stick it against the glass. The next day it would be a six point bull elk. The next a mountain lion. The next a saddle horse or white tail buck.

He and I both bucked off the same rank mare about six times(me five , him once) one day moving pairs off the bottom. The old man just laughed and ask "If you guys are gonna let her do that to you all day you're gonna be sore as hell when we get home tonight."
We finally gave up and sold that ornery b#$%h at the Miles City Bucking Horse sale.

edit to add:
Now there, is a unique event.
