Over on the Covid 19 Humor thread we veered into food. So I'm moving the subject to it's own thread.

Since we have people from all over the world here on LTG tell us about food stuffs that you have in your area that other people might never have heard of.

We started with Pork Roll/Taylor Ham in NJ, mentioned Scrapple in eastern PA, and I have offered:

Unless you are from the Binghamton, NY area, you probably have no idea as to what a "Spiedie" is!

Beef on weck. Garbage plates. Both regional favorites in an area I lived in for a few years but I have no recollection of eating either. Of course that was during college so "no recollection" applies to a lot more than food.

Chicago "pizza" is basically cheese pie.

There are many things called "pizza" which are not pizza. Du=isappointment comes from assuming your definition is the only one. Enjoyment comes from eating it, no matter what is called. Of course in my world, cooked tomato and melted cheese are two essential food groups.

In Boston, if you want a milkshake that includes ice cream, you need to order a frappe. Otherwise you'll likely just get milk with some flavored syrup blended in.

Folks living in Massachusetts' north shore area (i.e. north of Boston) refer to a steak sub with grilled onions, peppers and cheese, as a "steak bomb".

Took me a couple of tries to figure out that in some parts of the south, what sounded like "meet'n three" actually refers to a meat entree with three sides of your choosing.

From Al's favorite source:

Chicago-style pizza is pizza prepared according to several different styles developed in Chicago. The most famous is deep-dish pizza. The pan in which it is baked gives the pizza its characteristically high edge which provides ample space for large amounts of cheese and a chunky tomato sauce. Chicago-style pizza may be prepared in deep-dish style and as a stuffed pizza.[1][2]

From Michigan's Upper Peninsula: the Pasty. Basically a meat and vegetable pie.

Beef on weck. Garbage plates. Both regional favorites in an area I lived in for a few years [...]

And chicken wings. Well, chicken wings are everywhere now, but in the late 70's they were throwing them in the trash everywhere but Buffalo, NY. You could buy a bucket of 50 deep fried wings with hot sauce for $5. Went great with a Mighty Taco at 4am.

Garbage plates were created in Rochester at Nick Tahou's on West Main St. At 3am there would usually be at least three hookers, three cops, and two drunks pissing themselves. You could get the plate with two hot dogs (Zwiegle pop-open hots - Rochester only. Not those slimy wiggly things you get at the carnival) two cheeseburgers, or fish! Yes fish! There are fake plates available all over the Rochester area now, but nobody remembers them with fish.

Then there are grape pies if you live in the Finger Lakes region of NYS.

Southern Indiana...brain sandwiches.

My mom always made a tomato based beef vegetable soup, which I finally figured out was a version of burgoo, a mutton soup/stew from around Owensboro, KY.

We raised our own beef, and my Dad would make Oxtail soup.

If you get french fries around here (other than McDonalds), they always ask "you want fry sauce with that?" No! I don't want your stupid fry sauce! It's just ketchup and mayo. Ketchup, OK. Fry sauce, no thanks!
