The acoustic sound at the beginning is classic expression system tone. Not shrill, but I liken it to a very rubbery, bubblegum sound. Sounds interesting. Piezos tend to sound more like BBs and pellets dropping in a pie tin (especially the bad ones like on my beater Washburn acoustic).
Anyway, I agree it is nice to find a fellow GGD fan in these parts. They're what drew me to Guilds in the first place, and I'm thankful for that!
Yeah, it was kind of just a happy coincidence for me. Like it all just happened at once. And wham. Goo Goo Dolls, Guild, etc. I always felt so cool for having the same guitar as Johnny, even though I was scared to take it out of the house!
The Expression System does sound good. It's a little harsh, not in that it sounds bad, but just kind of more metallic than an unplugged acoustic guitar. And certainly harsher than the good old 1997 piezo rubber band sound.
D-tar sounds really interesting. I don't suppose there are YouTube clips of the D-tar in action? If I were ever in the position of being a touring artist and choosing a brand of guitars, I would be pretty tempted to go with Guild.
Here's a question for you guys. On that Let Love In Red Rocks clip about that we referenced for Expression System tone, are they tuned a full step below album tuning? I believe on the album, Let Love In uses the same tuning as Black Balloon; here, it sounds lower to me, but that would be tuning to C! Instead of DADGAD (or something like that), it would be... CBCFBC?? Something like that? ha Or did they just tune in E on the album?
Most of the songs on the Red Rocks DVD, particularly the ones played in E standard (or close to E standard), are all tuned to D standard. I know Johnny's voice has gotten lower, and not only that, Red Rocks is at a high elevation, which makes even just walking around difficult, so playing guitar and singing and running around all at once...
A lot of the pre-Let Love In stuff is just written with high vocal parts, so I can understand. I've had trouble with the songs for all these years, so it's almost like "payback" to see Johnny have to tune lower to sing them.
But at the same time, ya know, ya feel bad for the guy. Not that it sounds bad or anything. I just know he feels a little neurotic about it.
Anyway! Just wondering if you guys could shed light on it all. Didn't mean to talk your ears off.
