Can anyone tell me if i can record my electric guitar direct to my laptops' mic input using using a patch cord with the proper size adaptor?
Trying to figure out the "audacity" program..thanks for any advice..

I never did that and it might work, but I'd expect low quality.

I've got an earlier version of one of these. I plug the bass into it and then the line out into the computer and record. I did that because I didn't have the right adapters but the experience suggests using a guitar with the right adapter might work.

I used to plug my electric guitar direct (with adapter) into my PC and record onto cakewalk music creator. It worked.

Hi Larry,

Virtual handshake icon ? Never tried that and dont know if it would work, most of the recording devices use the USB input. There's some cheap adaptors that work but are of low quality and have latency (lag and echo) issues. I recently bought a Tascam Us 122mk2 from the good folks at Elderly which records onto my laptop via the USB. Be warned it's not as simple as it sounds and getting the thing to output to a file you can burn on a CD or something is quite a trick. There's also a very lengthy and frustrating registration program to go through. There was a thread on all this stuff somewhere in the recording section: think it was called recording to windows 7 or something ?

Good luck....

Cheers, Ian

Yes, you can connect the guitar to the mic input, in the sense that you will be able to record sound.
You should not expect it to sound like guitar played through an amp, though.

Part of the problem is that the guitar will see the computer input as a too low impedance. Connecting through an effects pedal might work better, and then there are devices like those frono linked to that do a lot more.

You can get a cord that adapts the guitar output to a USB plug, probably $20-30. I've even seen them at Target.
