FWIW: Cottonmouths (water moccassins) travel in pairs.....if You see one, there's prolly another lurking, nearby.
And like the copperhead, they are mean tempered & very aggressive.

For those who are unfamiliar with the cottonmouth snake:

Here's a pic of my grandboy with a big Eastern Diamondback rattler. It got hit by a car down the road from his house. At least 13 rattles, they were kinda banged up. Fangs about an inch long. Think it was moving across the road to water. Rumor has it that rattlers have learned not to rattle, just brings trouble.

I lived in the Ozarks for 5 years, and saw plenty of them. Once while wading the White River, one swam about 3 feet in front of me. I turned to head for shore, and sure enough, his pal was next to my tackle box. I walked backwards upstream a safe distance, and waited for them to move on.

OK, Here's the chorus:

The twelve-string is singing so sweetly
The four-ten is loaded with nine
Never mind that the kitty is gone now
Stick your head out baby, you’re mine

LOL!

More, more!

Not to discount stainless steel firearms or Jack Russell terriers( stainless steel shootin' irons are a good remedy for just about any household problem), but the old timers hereabouts swear by Hogs for snake control. After the snakes are gone you can always make bacon out of 'em.

With us having moved, we don't make town much anymore other than to do a little work at the home that belonged to my mother. Guildmark has been to that house for a visit, it's right in the middle of town and a very clean, well kept, middle class neighborhood.

Before we built, we sold our old house and since mother had passed away, we rented mom's place from my siblings at a discounted rate and an agreement to spiffy the place up a bit.

We moved in April and with our house, yard coming in and so much to do out here, the old home place had grown up. Hedges needed trimmed as did the sidewalks and the flower beds needed cleaned out badly. We got by there when we could, but it was starting to look pretty shabby.

Mother had a man named Miguel that had charged her the same rate......$20 a week to mow, trim and fertilize. :) He did her yard for the 15 years after dad died until she passed away. While we lived there, we maintained it, but nowhere near as nicely as Miguel did. A few days ago, I called Miguel to ask him to completely redo the flower beds and put the yard back on his weekly maintenance route as we're getting ready to sell the place.

Tonight Miguel called me to tell me that he had killed 9.......that's NINE copperheads in the front flower bed. I can't tell you how many times I've stuck my hand in the flower bed to pull a weed. The mom and the dad, as two of them were 2 1/2" long....and 7 babies. He also told me that the city crews are killing hundereds of them a week. I've never heard of an infestation like this around here.

Here we are way out in the country, watching every step we take......and have seen 1 garter snake (that I let live by the way). Heck, there aren't any out here......they're all in the middle of town! Don't let you shrubs get too big or the weeds get away from you.

Sounds like Miguel deserves a good raise. Not sure you could pay me enough to weed the garden, after hearing that. Steffan

Good thing you moved,

Now if you had kept a couple Jack Russells on Mom's old place they would have known those snakes were there. Really bad infestation like you're talking about a fella might have to replace a Jack Russell now & then.

I heard on the news the other day ya'll have been baking down there.

Appalachian Blues Billy sent me an email the other day saying he was bitten by a copperhead over the weekend. At least rattlers usually give warning they are around. Copperheads are just too dang sneaky and aggressive, and they hang around house foundations. Nasty suckers. The news said the other day snakes are so bad this year due to our drought (worst on record). They come around the house seeking water. Pam and I are off to the animal shelter when I get back to get a couple of ferrel cats...

He was bitten at work. Typical Billy: "It was a small one; didn't hurt that much"... Haven't heard from him since. Hope he made it to a hospital...

Just spoke with Billy. It seems there was one that crawled to the top of a trash dumpster. Billy walked by and was bitten on the arm, but says he didn't get his fangs into him very deeply, but just scratched him, and that it was a small copperhead, though most are small.

He told me the fang marks were very close together and that he squeezed the bite area and sucked the venom. He also killed the culprit.

Billy's wife wanted to take him to the ER, but he said he had a $2500 ER deductable and decided to do his own doctoring. His arm swelled and he became sick to his stomoch that night, but says he's fine now.......and lucky.
