Sad day for music, he was so unrecognized for the giant talent he was. Listen to his lyrics, he was a storyteller as much as Harry Chapin or Bob Dylan. I lost an old friend and inspiration today.

Um, I don't think he's passed away just yet, folks. Hospice care, yes, but still here.

Jesse Winchester was and is a big deal for me. When his first album came out in '70, I was a 17 year old 'expatriate Texan' living in NYC, trying to make sense of the world. I identified strongly with the man who was singing the Brand New Tennessee Waltz, a song written from the point of view of a guy who couldn't go back to his home in the South.

I rediscovered him much later. My old Trio used to play several songs off of his '99 Gentlemen Of Leisure album; Club Manhattan, Evil Angel and I Wave Bye-Bye. It was interesting that he really didn't have the Angst of Youth in his songs anymore, but still had great songs. Kind of gave me permission to grow up, that is, if I cared to do so :)

Thanks for everything, Jesse, both from the 60 year old I am today and the 17 year old I used to be, who still pops up occasionally to take stock of 'this Modern Age.'

Yep, saw the post by Janis Ian and responded, but still....Jesse is, has been and may be one of the more obscure and unrecognized of the great songwriters of our generation....a poet he was. I was always transported in my mind to Jesse's word when I used to see him perform in the late 60s....Steffan
