I saw Herb Ellis here at the Festival of Music a few years ago and I marveled at how smooth he was.
Great music....delivered effortlessly.
I guess that's what comes with many years of practice, practice, etc.

R.I.P., indeed :(

I remain a big fan of the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown & Herb Ellis. Their recordings are frequently spun at my place.

I saw him at the Jazz Quarry in Portland back in 86 or 87 - he seemed like a crotchety old fart - he was giving the local trios drummer a hard time - and had a brusque manner overall - but he has such a smooth melodic style - I really fell in love with his playing that night. He did a blistering version of the theme from the Flintstones that left jaws on the floor - The atmosphere there with all that red naugahyde in dim light, the stage 6 feet away from the tables - it was one of the best shows I have seen.

RIP Herb

I saw Herb Ellis and Joe Pass at NAMM one year when cats like that hung around the Polytone booth. They were just jamming and, oc course, Pass was a remarkable player. When it was Herbs turn he began by playing "nicely". But as his solo continued he began to stretch for more and more until even Pass just shook his head and put down his guitar. That's the day I became a fan.

Wow, I just saw this thread...... :(
I saw Herb at a tiny little place in Denver called El Chapultapec. The place was jam packed (probably holds 100 people) and I worked my way up to the stage area to see Herb sitting on a chair on the floor squished between the piano and bass players telling folks to give him a little space out front so he could breath. Then he proceeded to burn the place down!
I really wish I could remember what he played that night, it was '90 or '91, but I do remember telling myself that I just saw a living legend of Jazz that night tear it up!

RIP Herb
