Hi, all. I just bought my first Guild -- a circa 1997 (I think) goldtop Bluesbird. One of the volume knobs cracked during shipping, as if it got jammed down onto the shaft of the volume pot during shipping. Otherwise the guitar is fine, actually it's better than fine -- I love it. But does anyone know the going rate of a replacement knob on Ebay or know of any other place to get one? I'm trying to figure out whether its worth the hassle to pursue an insurance claim with UPS.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure. Some sites I saw had them listed but were out of stock. I don't imagine it would be worth a claim. You'll get some answers around here.

Or, if you're interested in a little more than just knobs, there's an auction on Ebay right now for two Guild pickups, phase switch, and three knobs plus master knob. Don't know what pups your git has but you could buy the whole vintage package and make it even better. \m/ -_- \m/

Take a look.

I'm tempted by them but don't really have anything to install them in at the moment. I'd consider putting them in my DeArmond S-73, which is a really tempting thought, but that would negate the unique thing about the guitar: the GoldTones.

Anyway, welcome to the asylum!

And does that "WV" mean we have another appalachain around here?

Enjoy.

Thanks. $25 probably isn't worth the trouble. Are there particular vendors that specialize in Guild parts?

Right. Home is Charleston, W.Va. As if by divine intervention, my Bluesbird arrived late Friday afternoon, shortly after WVU's abrupt departure from the first round of the NCAA tourney. Raised my spirits considerably.

I figured anyone brave enough to include "WV" had to be from there!

I drive through Charleston all the time on my way back home to Ohio. Exactly 100 miles north of you. Near Parkersburg. I HATE the highways through Charleston! Could we maybe take some more twists and turns and cross that river a few more times? Ooooh, look at the dome! ;)

Hi Dave and welcome to LTG! I wouldn't wait for a shipping claim. If you can find one for a good price, you can still buy it and submit the replacement cost as a claim for damage in transit. If nothing else, it puts the question about the amount of the loss to rest; all that'd be left would be evidence that it was in good condition before it was shipped.

btw: lots of fine memories of Charleston ... and Morgantown ... and Elkins ... and Kingwood ... and Parsons ... J

Thanks again, folks. I'll probably have more questions for you, as I bought the Bluesbird with Fralin P-92s in it. They sound killer, but I feel compelled to tryout a set of low output PAFs.

BTW, I used to know a girl named Sharon from Kingwood -- Sharon Share-alike we called her.

Hey Dave,
Welcome to LTG. For the most part, there aren't a whole lot of dealers who specialize in Guild parts besides the ones mentioned above. Your best bet is probably eBay. If I'm not mistaken, for a '97 goldtop you probably need the Guild logo silver-capped ones with the clear bodies? Those actually come up often enough, and usually go for less than the solid black ones. I think older ones have the words Tone and Volume on them and the newer ones like yours don't.

Love WV too! Lots of fond memories troutfishing and camping in the Monongahela. When I played and traveled a lot, some of my favorite clubs to play were the Nyabinghi Club in Morgantown, and of course The Empty Glass in Charleston.

Post some pics of your goldtop. Those are beautiful!

I'll be damned. There was one in Morgantown. That's the same name as a club in Youngstown, OH.

I might have one of those knobs.
I'll have to look and get back to you...

Yup. I think the WV one was first, but the owner moved it to Youngstown. He's a vintage Italian bike freak who also has a motorcycle shop in Youngstown. The Nyabinghi in Morgantown was a great club. I'm glad it didn't fold like some of the other great midwest clubs--Lounge Ax in Chicago (owned by Jeff Tweedy's wife) and Stache's/Little Brothers in Columbus. The Nyabinghi was kinda famous because supposedly, Henry Rollins lived in an apartment above there for a while and hung out at the club drinking microbrew and eating cookies--they used to bake fresh cookies :) If I recall, he wrote a lot of his earlier spoken word stuff during that time.

So are you also familiar with the legendary Penguin Pub in Y-town? Great club! Oh the memories.

Hi JP; where was the Nyabinghi ...downtown near the old campus or up north? Back in my time, there was nothing but Sunnyside (a/k/a Stinkyside) on the north edge of the downtown campus with lineup of bars with those signature sticky floors ... ??

I've never really done time in Youngstown or been to the club. Columbus on the other hand -- Staches was such a s*@thole! Ah, good times...It was better (or nicer) as Little Brothers. Good shows at the Newport too. When I was in a band we played High Five, and friends of mine did time at Freakin' Pizza (even played shows with Clutch when all they had out was their first 4-song EP). Neilhouse was a hub of activity too, if you knew that place. And Bernie's. The only big show I went to in an arena was at ... Schottenstein's? I think? Anyway, Weezer and TENACIOUS D!!! Also little hardcore shows in Dayton, saw Rollins spoken word at Bogart's in Cincinnati, shows in Huntington and different clubs. Only one I remember was the Empire Club. Oh, and I saw Clutch live by the river in Huntington during a festival. It only cost a dollar to get in! The promoter had a boat moored on the riverbank for them to hang out on. It was stocked with beer so I got to chill with them and drink for free. Same festival that had a skateboard contest about ten years earlier. I won my age division.

Wow, amnesiac stroll down memory lane!

When did you play at the Nyabinghi in Morganhole? I was at WVU from 87-91.

I'm pretty sure it was on Pleasant Street near the river. We used to also play at a brew pub right down the street that I think is gone now.

I think it was around '94-'95, so it'd be a little after your time. We'd go through there on our way to the East Coast. Lotsa crazy snow storms in the mountains!

Know all those clubs well. Although Stache's was a major dive, it was important because there were never any clubs that brought in unknown bands before it's existence. Here's a VERY abbreviated list of bands I saw there: Nirvana, Yo La Tengo, Pixies, Soundgarden, Sun Ra, Koko Talyor, GG Allin, GBV, John Lee Hooker, Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus Lizard, Willie Dixon, Sonny Sharrock, etc. I mean I could go on forever. It was a recommended venue for all new bands on their way to the East Coast during the late 80s and early 90s. Although this predates your time a little, Bernie's and Apollo's (above Freakin' Pizza) were the only other places for new rock bands to play in town. Believe it or not, but Beck played at Bernie's (the Distillery) and White Zombie played at Apollo's!
