Question fro Hans: SF V w/DeArmond

Hi Hans,

You may have covered this at an earlier time but I can't recall. Did Guild manufacture SF V's with Dearmond pickups? I have seen the SFXII but can recall the SFV. If they were offered what is the best guess on the quantity? When was the last time one was seen for sale and any guess on the ball park $.

I guess I should have checked "The Bible" before asking the first part of my question. I see on page 89 a picture of a DeArmond PUP SF V.

Any additional info on this model is appreciated.

Hello Mike,

When the 'small' humbuckers were introduced during the early '60s, the DeArmonds were no longer the 'top-of-the-line' pickup. However, Guild still had a lot of them in stock and during the following years DeArmonds were available as an option, although this option was not mentioned in Guild literature. Over the years I've seen plenty of models that were equipped with DeArmonds and usually they would have the 'Special' designation on the label, pointing out that this was not a standard set-up.
Unfortunately, Guild didn't keep any records re. these 'special's, so we only learn about them when we come across one.
The amount of Starfire Vs with DeArmonds I've seen so far is somewhat limited and it's been quite a while since I've seen one for sale, so I cannot give you a ball park figure.

Hello Darryl,

No, they only used the black plastic mounting rings when the bodies were already routed for different pickups or when the pickups had to be mounted 'into' the body instead of 'on top' of the body because of the available space; or lack of space to be more precise.

Thanks Hans. Now I think I understand it. If they used a mounting ring for a dynasonic, the ring would be similar to the one used on mickey mouse pups (page 32) but bigger. Or like this one:
