Ok, so I have been bitten by the Starfire bug, I believe that an early 70's hof SF will suit my needs best, and ran across this on Craigslist. As I have been bitten on CL before I am very cautious in my dealings with the sellers. I have contacted the seller with the usual questions and such. Are there any issues that jump out at my bretheren just from the few pics? And last, but not least, is there anyone who lives close enough to pickup and ship this bad boy if the seller is not willing? I know that's a lot to ask, but I really want an early 70's hog starfire!

Looks nice Hart, but this picture makes me wonder

How would the finish get worn away that badly around the pots, especially when there doesn't seem to be much wear elsewhere on the guitar? Others here might have a better idea than I do.

The guy must have played with a lot of volume swells!

I thought that too, but both pots? Previous owner must have been an Octopus!

I'm thinking long fingernails.

I doubt the bridge is original, which means the top has likely been drilled to fit the tune-o-matic.

In 1973 the Starfire IV had already the Mueller Adjustomatic bridge, so the bridge mounting is original I think. However the mounted bridge might be a replacement as the two height adjustment screws left and right look different and the saddle pieces might be different, hard to see in that crappy picture.

The distance between the mounts/screws is longer for mueller bridges than for "standard" adjustomatics. If it has an adjustomatics with the shorter distance between screws, then everything has changed.

Thanks for all the info guys. This fella isn't returning my emails anyway, so I think I'll move on. I might even wait until I can get my hands on/or hear reviews for the new starfires coming out of Korea. They look very attractive, and I'm anxious to hear what the sound like in person! And thanks for the video on volume swells Grot! See, that's why I love this place, I learn so much about music, not just about guitars!

Apologies for the necro-thread bump, but I'm trying to get ahold of Memphis about my old S-100 Carved. Hey Memphis, your PM box is full and I don't have your email or a phone number. Are you around?

Hi Memphis, I don't think it is possible to change the handle (for various security reasons), but you should send a PM to Chazmo to ask for help. He might know what to do, or he will probably point you straight to Don, the forum owner. I don't know what happened with your old account, but maybe Don can merge your old and new accounts under "Memphis" again.
