My vote is that these are WONDERFUL axes that keep the great Guild tradition ALIVE AND WELL.
I played both instruments extensively at Gelb Music in Redwood City, CA. Asking price on the D-40BJ is $1875. Price on the D-50BS is $1995. Both are worth every penny.
While my ear usually doesn't prefer the sound of Adi tops (I don't play Bluegrass), both of these guitars sounded just wonderful. No dead spots anywhere on the neck that I could find. Worked great everywhere on the neck with my Schubb capo installed.
Quality of workmanship was just simply PERFECT. There was absolutely nothing to fault. Setup was stellar too. Low action and zero buzzes anywhere.
Looks to me like the Tacoma-to-New Hartford transition hasn't caused a setback in what we've come to expect from Guild. If I didn't already have a superb D-50 in my stash, I would have bought that one at Gelb on the spot.
WELL DONE NEW HARTFORD!
