Moles, huh? .... Creative little buggers.

Hey Graham, mind sending me the link for that Russian instrument shop where you found that thing? - Must be way out there in Siberia somewhere, beyond the reach of Glasnost, where the hammer&sickle still rules. Man, with the points on that thing, you sure got to be careful when you're swinging it in the direction of your lap.

Or whats wrong with this one?

Hey Capn
Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a good picture of some fine Ukrainian "Carpathian Red Spruce".
http://www.alliedlutherie.com/spruces.htm

Apparentlly he still likes the traveling Monk wandering the Carpathians doing a Johnny Appleseed impersonation with North American Red Spruce seed story. I wonder what this "Monks" affiliation was. A Druid? Did Druids have Monks? My general impression of Monks is a bunch of guys in robes making a lot of beer.

I hope Guild didn't buy their tops from this guy for the new D40 and D50s at the lower "Carpathian Red Spruce" price.
Interestingly they have nearly identical stiffness according to the Euroguys chart at the bottom of this page.
http://www.best-eurospruce.com/3.html

You might have a glimmer of hope for your retirement in Romania. Looks like nearly half of the Carpathians are in Romania.
Since they shot or hanged their last president for life, they might be a tad more friendly.
Check out these picts. I think I see a couple of trees they might be willing to sell.

To my grandfather, these people were 'Eucheranains'; he had names for every other ethnology too; Hunkies, Polacks, and, when he wasn't too sure, they were: "Finn-Garians". If he were around today, the PC police would be all over him.
That's right, but with most geography people know no borders. As a nation Ukraine is separated from mother Russia but Ukraine is inhabited of many Russians, espec in the Eastern most part of the country. There's also a slight distinction between the Ukrainian slavic language and the Russian one, though only of a dialectual nature.

My virtual lady-friend (much so since I've not heard from her since she turned sick and her mother broke her leg (the leg of the mother that is - or so I hope :) )) is of Russian ancestry and spend her days in Lugansk (Rus)/ Luhansk (Ukr) close to the Russian border.

I do think I have those Hunkies pegged, though. Could they all be male and very handsome looking? ;) No wonder they're a minority.

* Sorry if this diverts this thread *

Not so far off the mark really RT. I believe this one is from Czechoslovakia.[IMG:126:331]http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r126/Graham_61/jolana_bigbeat.jpg[/img]

A guitar with a removable amp is also being done by a German company.

Hi Ray: From one of the links - I though this was interesting:

"It is known that they insisted in getting moon-spruce when selecting tops. It all was picea gluteus maximus, the same wood we are offering."

(Jonas: that would be picea naken klubbe to you; Norwegian was as close as I could get - and thanks for clearing up the matter of the broken leg)

Unless they mooned the trees themselves, how does the wholesaler know the trees have already been mooned? For example, what's to stop a couple of rednecks (Euro variant) from going in the woods and only pretending to moon the trees?

If we go to the Carpathians, which of us is going to bring the garlic and silver cross?

Graham: can you help us get a better visual on this 'moonwood' thing?

Hey Sitka
I think your grandpappy was refering the "Hunkies" to the Bohemians, unless he was thinking of Hungarians.
The only reason I know that is my wife is half Bohemian from her father who was all Bohemian and the term "Bohunk" came up rather often.
Bohemia, of course, was part of the Hungarian empire and got dummed down to Checkloslovakia after world war 1. Bohemia was next door and just to the left of Transylvania, currently Romania.
Bohemians like my wife's Dad are an independent lot and were not too fond of their Hungarian conquerers. A Bohemian would never call himself a Hungarian
So I'm guessing "Bohunk" refers to goodlooking Bohemian males? :)
That would make my wife then a "Bohunkess"? :D

Hey Cap
I never go anywhere without garlic and a silver cross. Could be the reason I have so few students in the summer. Cold weather helps keep down the fumes.
Shouldn't be a problem crossing borders over there since everybody has been carrying garlic and silver crosses over there since that psycho Vlad The Terrible thought it great fun to impale everybody on sticks.
They did QUIT doing that, Right?
We might have a problem though with my Colt 45 that I reloaded with silver and wood bullets. You CAN kill Vampires with a wood bullet to the heart, Right? Cuz I'm not too keen on sneaking up on sleeping vampires with a wood stake and a hammer.

Not sure about Vlad; at some point, Hollywood will exploit the guy's reputation....we should wait for the movie 'Bad Vlad' to find out for sure. That part of the world has seen endless warfare and strife...up to and after WW2...it isn't clear what they do there now.

Maybe we can sell some of those kooky Russian guitars there or a load of defective wristwatches; get Graham to paste a Russian dredstik onto the chest of a Euro-popular guitar god or Ted Nugent, plaster the pic on Carpathian billboards....

Also not sure on the wood bullet; each State has it's own rules on Hunting...maybe I muffed....maybe it's a silver cross to fend off and a wood stake for the kill....if true, seems to me that would put a wood bullet in play...however the Colt 45 is best when kept on ice....we'll keep it and just throw the bullets...that ought to do it.

That would make the headline:

"While looking for trees to moon and mistaking an actor for a figure from regional folklore, two middle-aged Americans, both drunk on Colt 45, were arrested in Romania for throwing wood bullets at a character in local historical society re-enactment.".

We may have to ask Jonas to sit this one out; considering the risk, we may need someone to help with bail...

Wouldn't it be more interesting if the lumberjacks were the ones doing the mooning? :D

I think they do more than moon. They seem to be a very talented, if not artistic, lot.

This one may get yanked, so to speak.

That's not one of those barometric sensitive branches is it, you know the ones that point upwards at high pressure and downwards at low pressure?

Any suggestion for a species of that piece of wood? Red? Blue? Black? :D

Nice goin' Graham, now we all have to stay after school........

OT: From a Discussion Forum on the subject of Moonwood:
Ñåðûé êàê ïûëüíàÿ äîðîãà,
Êòî-òî íåóçíàâàåìûé, íî ãîâîðèò ÷òî ðîäíîé,

Òû çíàåøü, ÿ ïî÷òè ïîâåðèë â ñëîâà åãî.
È íå ïîòîìó ÷òî îí ìåíÿ óáåäèë,

Òû çíàåøü - ïîòîì ÿ åãî óáèë,

Seems pretty extreme to me.

Instrument said to be made from Moonwood:
