The latest issue of Guitar Player magazine has the great shot of Pete with his Merle Travis Guild on the cover in glorious hI-pixel color.

Probably their best album of all time...

I know Tommy was very popular but also unique and strangely acoustic vs electric. Quadro is one of my faves, I loved that album.

But Who's Next was just flat out their best record. In the top 3 rock albums of the 70s, and for me, top 10 of all time rock albums. I would put it in top 5 all time but I am biased.

Some folks I know never cared for the Who but I personally loved their stuff. Just raw energy. I saw them in concert in Minneapolis and it was one of the better shows I'd ever seen.

John and Roger were pretty low key. But Pete and Keith, they were chaos.

Is there something weird going on with the neck pickup and his thumb in the picture, or is that normal?

Copy that, Chris. Odd that the pickup seems to cross some of the frets. Just weird placement (from the factory), I guess.

Saw The Who at The Pontiac Silverdome 1975. biggest indoor concert ever, (at the time) 80,000 people.

Since that picture is getting recycled a lot it is worth noting that Pete sold or traded the guitar and ended up with a boat.
As far as I remember from previous discussions Pete Townshend sold her in 1989 (?) to Gruhn (?) to finance his 46' boat.
Chris had mentioned this before, he had to sell a few more to buy that yacht as PT mentioned in his autobiography "Who I Am":
"I sold a lot of precious guitars to make the deal: two De Angelicos, the Gibson Flying V that Joe Walsh had given me (boy, was he pissed off when he found out), the Guild Merle Travis, a double-neck white Gibson and a few lesser ones."

He had to sell guitars to buy a boat? What, is the guy broke?

That was back in 1989 when he did his Yachtmasters and he bought a Fisher 46 motorsailer. He owns or owned a few great yachts!

The largest boat he owned was the "Gloria", a beautiful 126-foot Jongert classic sailing yacht. He bought her in 2010 and sold her again in 2017 I believe. If you fancy, you can rent the boat for only $49,000 per week!

My thoughts exactly! He wrote pretty much all their music, so even in 1989 when he sold the guitars, he's got huge publishing royalties coming in, sold millions of albums, etc. He must have had a very expensive lifestyle, or a very bad accountant.

Pete made more $ vs the rest of the band. Their later tours were to help make John money. And probably Roger too.

Right, the composers always make more, see The Beatles. That's my point, why couldn't he just buy the boat without selling guitars?

Reminds me of Ginger Baker, talking about Cream. Complained that Pete Brown (who wrote most of the songs with Jack Bruce) was making more money than himself and Eric Clapton, even though he wasn't in the band!

One of the reasons why they had to tour in the 90s, was that John never stopped living extravagantly after they had stopped recording/touring while Pete and Rog cut back. Those racing yachts are $$$$$$$! Kind of the definition of extravagant. He may have had plenty of money to live on, but this would have probably put a strain on things.

Plus, he has two daughters and a son.
