Ah, I see, so we misunderstood you. I was wondering... And the D-40 was the standard model that got satin finished.

Thanks! Not that I truly "doubted", but we all have our moments. Mine just started a lot later.
Well, that's a topic we can only speculate about unless we would have input from a factory employee or Ren himself... Ren tasked many builds and some were M-20 and some D-20. There were pictures around that time of them. As we all know the biggest issue was finishing, so they had done many trial runs, and we don't know which were shipping and which were scrapped.Anyway your caveat "That doesn't mean it was the first guitar built in the new facility, though" made it clear there could be reasons for the "anomaly".
But now my curiosity's up.
I have an F-40 Traditional, but I do not have a D-40 Traditional. Compared to my non-Guild mahogany dreadnaughts, the F-40 is in the same tonal range, but the response is different. The F-40 reacts like a big 000 or OM style guitar. The sound is very sweet, good bass response, and great note separation. What the dreadnaughts have is a more focused midrange that gives it punch and projection. The dreads are also a bit louder and have more headroom. Are they different enough to have both? I guess it depends on how you will use them. I really like the F-40 for fingerstyle and the dreadnaughts for flat picking, so for me, there's enough of a difference.Do you feel there is enough variance in sound/tone between the D-40 Traditional and the satin F-40?
