LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A dog who moved in with Michigan's first family the summer after Gov. Jennifer Granholm took office died unexpectedly this week while racing around the yard.

Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said Friday that Mackinaw, an 8-year-old chocolate Lab-pointer mix known as "Mac," died Tuesday. She says the first family is "heartbroken."

The governor's three children, then 13, 12 and 5, picked out the puppy at the Michigan Humane Society's Detroit shelter as part of a deal with their mom. Granholm had promised her three children they could get a dog if she won the gubernatorial election and the family had to move to Lansing.

Mac was shown on several family holiday cards. He had no known health problems and had been seen by a veterinarian Monday on a routine visit.
