There's a few things not to like about that one. There are several new, comparably priced Guild acoustic/electrics around on Ebay and Reverb I'd consider. Don't rush it. Nothing worse than a used guitar that needs it's neck reset.

Happy hunting.

I agree with jedzep. The missing heel cap is no big deal, but the cracking of the finish along the back of the heel suggests it has moved.

You can do a lot better at the $400 price point. Here's an American-made, clean '93 D-4 for $450.

We've discussed that black one before. The heel cap missing is a thing but it's not a critical part, but the sides where the neck joins the body looks like it may have already had a neck reset. It's also FILTHY!! I remember us talking about how dirty the thing was. For that money, you can probably do better. If the neck angle is good and it's been reset and the string height is good, the dirt will come off. Also, check if the electronics work.

I'd stay away from this one.

What are his criteria?

Prices just going up across the board on everything, but I like this one. A bit steep for me re a D4, but it looks to be in solid shape, ready to play. Shipping available and maybe you can make an offer:

Hey Amnicon, is this going to be a starter guitar for a student level player?

I've learned that this is a bit of a moving target. Likely a dreadnaught or larger, he's drawn to cut-aways, and doesn't like the looks of a natural spruce top. Something solid and quality, but not so fancy he can't haul it around. He's been playing my GAD 25 a lot and likes that, but mostly because he's scared to hurt my D40.

Not a starter guitar. He's 18 and took lessons for a few years ago on electric and got fairly nimble, capable fingers out of it. He's recently found bluegrass music and is now drawn back to guitar and wants an instrument he can treat as he sees fit rather than feeling obligated to take special care of mine.

He's still learning about what he likes and what all he want's to play, it's been fun talking with him about guitars again!

Might be worth checking out a D-120CE or a D-140CE in that case. The D-120 is all-mahogany and the D-140 is spruce/mahogany (available in a sunburst finish); both are current dreadnought models made in China with all solid woods. I often see both available in very good condition for $600-700, and sometimes a little less.

I have a D-140 (without the cutaway, electronics, or sunburst) and I love it, and I've seen positive comments on both of these models on the forum.

Waiting for a good deal on an older Guild isn't a bad idea either, of course, but I think those two models are likely to be good options considering price, condition, and the specs (size, cutaway, top color) that you mentioned.

I like DCE1s (I'm on my second one). But price-wise, the one I have now cost me $400 as well and it's still in better shape than the one in the link.

I'll stay out of the domestic vs import argument, except to say that Westerly, RI is a wonderful place.

But I do think you can find a better deal on a DCE1 or D4 in better condition.

I'm helping my son find an acoustic, and this one fits lots of his criteria. What are all you smart people seeing with the heel? Is this pulling up such that a neck reset is coming? Other damage? Something else entirely? Does that saddle look low to you?

amnicon,
I know this will be viewed by many Guildsters as heresy, but is there a compelling reason why you are limiting your/his choices to a Guild guitar?

Neither I nor he are limiting choices to Guild. I have more familiarity with Guild than any other, so I can peruse Ebay /Reverb and quickly know what I'm looking at and compare things for him. He grew up around my Guilds, and so sees them as a solid option but is looking at lots of things right now.
We've looked at some Guilds, a Seagull, a Fender, amongst some others as he's figuring more what he wants.

And since you're looking at Seagulls, I'll tell you that my two gigging guitars are an Simon & Patrick Songsmith Folk, and an Art & Lutherie Roadhouse parlor, both of which punch up quite a bit.

I think Godin makes really high quality instruments in all their divisions. I love the Art & Lutherie line a lot!! Their prices aren't crazy either for American (Canadian) built guitars either!! (y)(y)

Well, there's a F-250ce on order for my son.

ProStarAudio was offering a B-Stock one, so it's on the way for just under $350. In the end he didn't know what he really wanted or really needed for what he's playing. This seemed like a great option to keep him playing and isn't too expensive if his interests spread.

And let me tell you, he's pretty excited for it to arrive this week!

We've started to look for hard cases for it, any chance someone has a jumbo case laying around that needs a new home?
