I seem to have spent a couple of years buying/selling/playing and "finally" landed on a very, very satisfying guitar. My Martin D-28 Marquis about did it for me. Then I was downtown with little to do and there was a music store nearby (you probably know the rest of the story.....)

I love maple for my mandolin. It sings sweet and light but doesn't give up the bottom on mine. I see this nice maple jumbo on the wall. The friendly salesguy comes up and offers to take it down (its up high) and let me play it. First I notice the strings are really dead - must have been quite a few of you in here doing the same thing before me :) But I play it a bit, then a bit more, I notice how it "fits" in my lap (easier to hold than a dread). It has some rumble, but its not overpowering. Sweet at the top. Very maple. Then the cosmetics - the back is carved just enough, seems to be one piece of wood. Beautiful!

Somebody talk me down, man. Somebody talk me down.

Go for it, you may never have the chance to own a brand new one again. You will never regret it. You will kick yourself if you go back to play it again, and its g o n e ! The sales guy will probably throw in a new set of strings. It will match your mandolin. It will have more long term value to your kids than money someday. It gives you something to do when you're not playing your mandolin. All of your Martin playing friends will be jealous. You will have so many stories to share with the rest of us. You won't be asking for help anymore, till you run into a F115 in maple. It never has a headache. Imagine what it will sounds like with new strings. Its a better investment than GM or Ford stock, maybe. It will be one less temptation for anyone here who may stumble into that store. You already like it better than the Martin. If your wife will be getting pissed off at you, she might as well have a reason, or she may love it. We are all pulling for you, you can do it. Resist temptation, just do it. You can play it every day, one day at a time. Remember, we're here for you..... and we love pictures.  Steffan

I'm affraid you've come to the wrong place to be talked out of buying a Guild, mate. Guild and maple is a match made in heaven, more so than the Gibby original SJ200 that's plain tinny sounding.

I could try and persuade you into the slightly smaller models, the F47, CV2 and WP, but if you want to rid the thoughts entirely you'll require expert aid.

first -tell them you want it to have a new set of strings to hear its full potential ( tell them its dead ) then bring in the martin and go head to head -or keep them both. Martin D-28 Marquis are great instruments- no question about it . But only buy the Guild if your 100 percent happy with the sound - dont figure it will get better with time - if its not in your groove- walk away -Personnaly i wouldnt mind a F-50 as well , but mine would have to be old and well seasoned - im to the point in my life where i dont want to wait 30 years for a guitar to be great - id rather buy a 30 year old guitar thats great now. In all honesty Im betting you Marquis is a fantasic guitar - but everyone needs a maple guitar as well - Mine is a '81 Greven DXN jumbo whyte lady -

Here is a picture of 2 of John Denvers Guitars.
I saw them in Aspen and even got to play them.
The one on the left is a Greven Whyte Lady.
The one on the right is a custom Yamaha that John used for several years before switching to Taylor guitars.

You probably wont believe this -i actually saw and handled that that guitar in the build process as well as John's other Greven in Nashville Indiana ( where john Greven use to live ) my Jumbo whyte lady has matching wood to one of John Denvers guitars - the one i talking about has a fantasy broad leaf maple back with abalone inlays ( mine is the next cut and matches it almost perfectly )-. Ive been trying to get detailed pictures of both of John Denver's guitars - back and front shots - think the one thats closer to my Jumbo went for sale at dream guitars (? ) some time back and was selling for 63 thousand - do you have any other detail shots of the guitar as well as the back ? their use to be a beautiful picture of it on the net - with both back and front- but i cant seem to find it .

Clark,

The siren song of a Guild jumbo is hard to resist. I've succumbed twice myself, and am about to do so a third time next week. Sorry, I won't be the one talking you down. ;) Oh, also, be sure to try an F50R someday.

In the immortal words of Pete Hogwallop, "Do not seek the treasure!" OK, I did my part. Asking us to talk you down from Guild Acquisition Syndrome is like asking Jack the Ripper to babysit your kids.

I played a nice '80 maple F-412 a couple years ago I could have had for 900 bucks. Still kicking myself for passing up that one...

wa3, you'd like my handmade Birdseye Maple mando. Can't seem to get photos up right now though :x

Dreadnut - birdseye is beautiful, drop a pic if you have time.
Tony - you have a point there. I'm going to keep my eye out for older ones (I care less and less about cosmetics anyway). Yes, my D-28 Marquis is wonderful, probably the one guitar I'd keep if I had to let all go but one. It is taking time to get to "know" the guitar and it is growing on me.
Chazmo - I'm only lucky they had one Guild on the wall in that store.
Taabru45 - If my mother was still alive and watching over my shoulder, she'd say, "I don't want you talking to that boy anymore!" :)

So, last night my wife kindly (?) "talked me down" .... she explained that a beautiful guitar at home already is like a beautiful woman that I'm married to. I can go out and admire all the other beautiful woman. It may even be possible that I could, in some alternate reality, have a relationship with them. But in this life, I come back to the one I've got at home. (She didn't explain my guitar/mandolin/cittern "polygamy" though....) Overall, she says if I can sell enough of my other hobby equipment to raise the cash and not dip into our family funds at all, she'd love to hear me sing a few songs to her with the F-50. I'd sold most of my amateur radio gear to buy the Marquis. Unless the new administration comes up with a serious "economic stimulus" package of multi thousands of dollars and a guarantee of all mortgage payments, I'll move slowly on this one. But looking for one "used" is a great idea. I do have a little cash I'm throwing into a drawer as I sell odd tubes and other old radio supplies.

Might be worth buying - if things get much worse we will have Zimbabwe type hyperinflation, and money will lose all value - but you would have an INVESTMENT

Don't know what you're getting at - I was never accused of paedophilia

Jack the Ripper
I was thinking more like a pimp asking Jack the Ripper to babysit his "Ho's".
The Muffin Man's the one you don't want to babysit your kids.

Your wife sounds stellar. There have been mention here of sometimes having to play mostly when the wife is out of town, or she tolerates the playing. So how lucky are you?
Its not like looking at other women, at all, its more like exploring the different aspects of the same beatutiful woman you are married to. You appreciate her looks, then she suprises you with her, insights, cooking, shoot a moose whatever....and you grow, maybe write and sing her a song.
I have four Guilds and like children they are all loved, but they are all Guild, and they all bring different parts of 'me' out when I play them. Economically it may not make sense for me at this time, but for sure, If I sold them all the money would be gone one day, and I would be Guildless, and unhappy. So here you are with a couple of treasures in place already, and I guess the question is, does it make more sense to have a drawer full of radio stuff or the F 50 that she could share in with you're singing her love songs. Door 2 sounds like a great idea to me! I'm trying to redeem myself here, I don't want to have to answer to your mother one day! :) Steffan

Spouses react differently to GAS. In this case, we're talking about Clark's apparent non-GASsy good sense! :)

More power to the Mylanta crowd! :D :D
