"The" Cream?? That's funny! So, by that logic, it should really be "The The Who" for that poster, right? :D

The difference in our ages shows. When the original groups were touring there was always a question about what to call the bands. Cream or The Cream? Jefferson Airplane or The Jefferson Airplane? The Doors or Doors? Beatles or The Beatles? The Jimi Hendrix Experience? Etc. generally the fans and those in the know had a preference. The clueless, who tended to be parents and concert promoters, often used "the" coming from a different understanding of the language. In most cases the The was dropped but not always. It is still "The Doors" most places I frequent. At one point, which gets back to the age comment, using "The" was the norm. But it seems pretty awkward today.

So, was there a time, pre-Chazmo, when people called the group "The Cream," Fro? And was there a time when "The Doors" were called "Doors?"

I definitely get the confusion, but I would've thought that concert promoters would make it their business to know how to promote their headliners. Serves me right for expecting so. :D

Yes.

The orchestra calls themselves Boston Pops but that did not stop a promoter from promoting "The" Boston Pops.

I saw the Who once, just after Tommy came out. I can still see Pete windmilling his guitar while executing his midair splits.

Great musicians, and they never forgot they had an audience.

Last summer, someone said to that he had just seen The Who in concert. My reply was, he saw Townshend and Daltrey with a bunch of backup musicians. Without Entwistle and Moon, it's no longer The Who.

I was the bassist in a power trio and we played that song. I had to "distill" Entwistle's bass part. He was a monster player the likes of whom we may never see again.
No doubt! Then you can appreciate this 3 piece, on bass there was Allen Woody keeping the flame alive, and sadly he’s gone too, he was such a bad man on bass. Mule covered lots of stuff, including killer versions of Young Man Blues from time to time:
