Update , well it's been interesting .... So story time again ? Well why not what else is there to do ? Lol
Ok so I mentioned the guitar is going back but that has changed . Heres what happened. Upon inspection of the guitar there are some irregularities that Marc did not see . This guitar turns out to be more like a new old stock guitar . He built it and had it at his shop put it a way and that was that . Theres no players wear on it at all .
So as you all know I am extremely anal about fit finish tone etc . The things I found are on the top by the tail block equally spaced are two indents extending about 3/4 of a inch best guess running with the grain . There not deep and you might not notice them at first .
They are on the back in the same place but far less noticable. Marc is at a loss to what could of caused them .
On the back is beautiful Ziricote . Along the seam where the heart wood is are few finish flaws as well as hmmm how do I say this ... Lets just say hump that runs parallel the on the seam of the two halfs . You cant see it so much as feel it. In two other places farther out I noticed a slight hump as well .
It seems these two spots are cracks and have been repaired or stablized with CA glue which can be seen on the inside of the guitar .
Now these cracks where not open and the repair was done during the build . There are no cleats used nor are the cracks through the finish but you can feel a slight hump where they are .
Marc told me that heart wood sometimes is harder to equal out ( my words ) when leveling and sanding so you can feel a difference between the two areas.
Lastly the truss rod is a bit off set from the excess hole and the layer of wood above it is cracked . Obviously with out an Xray i can look into the guitar but I was able to adjust the truss rod and there is no rattle or anything to imply that something is broke or lose .
As for everything else this is a beautiful guitar . I cleaned it and put it up until i could ship it back.
Its tone Ziricote has is totally new to me . The reverb from the E and B strings has a instantaneous response and to the ear it almost gives off a hollow sound type of effect . Thats the best way i can say it .
So what am I hearing ??? Maybe one of you have a better answer for that. Ok so let me record it do I did and guess what no hollow sound at all ??????
So I pretty much discovered reverd sound thing after Marc asked me if I was playing it ? No I said I put it up so nothing happens to it .
Marc says just play the dang thing I'm not worried about it play it and let me know your thoughts on it ,basically review it . So I have been playing it and its growing on me . Clear rich tone wonderful bass not deep but clear well balanced . The guitar rumbles with its rich tones .
The neck has a satin finish unlike others I played it almost feels like there is no finish on it smooth effortless sliding . The neck has more of a traditional D shape but its not chunky at all . Its comfortable and I have no issues forming open chords or bar chords . Making lead runs is a breeze and movement up and down the neck is fast if thats what you want to do so no issues on that at all .
So now what do I do with it ? Well me and Marc have talked many times about it.
Because of Covid it turns out Marc has had a bad time of things unknown to me during are business he has been strugging with sick family menbers one of which has passed away due to Covid-19 along with a strugging business that being his music stores .
With all that going on its no wonder Marc missed the flaws I found or failed to mention them. I totally understand that I could have easily missed many things with that much pressure and stress .
We got back together to work out options of which he offered 5 . Of course a full refund was one in which he asked if had lost faith in LM guitars ?
I said absolutely not !
He would of built me a brand new guitar and upgrade it to a Adirondack top with all the bling to go with it .
Another option was to consider a replacement with a Cocobolo model as he did not have any othe Ziricote models other then two OM'S which are very nice but not what I wanted spec wise.
The Cocobolo model has everything my original Ziricote GA ( Grand Auditorium) had being the Florentine cut acway and bling Ebony fingerboard and bridge etc.
This model is not new but a 2015 model . The Cocobolo is nice but no heart wood in it.
Interestingly the back has a few knots in it . He went over the guitar with my particular requirements this time so knots are the only issue.
I mentioned that knots is not necessary a good thing in guitar builds. Marc many of his customers like the look and buy them . Well i guess if their stable not spider cracking or ready to pop out they'd be ok right ? Lol ok I'm picking on him , being in Malaysia they may very well have a different market as far as looks so who am I to say .
Mark told me the knotts have been stablized when built and still remain pefectly stable. The only thing is he said the finish has a bit of fish eye over the knotts . I can most likely fix that if needed but its hard to see from the pics so I'm not worried.
Ok lets try to end this story . I opted for a new guitar and upgrade but after a day or two about thinking about it I changed my mind .
Marc would not to able to build a guitar until flights opened up and he can get to his shop which is located in Soul I believe .
Anyway you look at it it would take time maybe a year or more who knows . With all the things going on and what he has had to go through I said I go with the Cocobolo GA . In our discussion one the reasons for this option was that I have never had or played a Ziricote or Cocobolo guitar.
I just can't justify in my head having him have to keep in mind that he owes me a guitar that would take untold time to fulfill with all the crap going on and what he has had already had to deal with .
I guess even butt holes like me can be kind once in while . Lol
Now my kindness does not equal Marcs . I will get this guitar at no cost and still keep the Ziricote model . All he asks is a review . Of coarse I'll not mention the defects because this is not the norm and I spoke with a few customers that have flawless models .
I will say I never had anyone besides Ben Wiborn who would work with me or go out of there way to make sure I am satisfied . Marc has given me 5 options of which all I would have benefited from .
All through this venture he was kind respectful and working hard to satisfy his customer.
Marc is one cool dude and now a friend .
Shipping has been suspended because of increased Covid cases so it will be a few weeks before he can ship the guitar out.
I'll update when I get it .
Peace and good health to you all ,stay safe !
