With the new Tacomas, they have nailed the sound right away; putting in the best wood in their traditional guitars. Seems they spared no expense. That is great news for us new guitar buyers. I am not too crazy over the contemporary models, but the D-40, D-50, F-40; they are real nice.
I like my '82 D-50 a whole lot, but I think the the new D-50 from Tacoma is a better playing, better sounding guitar. Wouldn't go so far as to trade one for the other, but hey, why not have both? Now THAT'S a good idea!!

my next guild will be a new D-40 BJ.....that should end all GAS for me!

Yeah....& I once dated a girl who tried for weeks to convince me that she didn't fart. Turns out that wasn't true either.

Oh, I doubt it will end all GAS. There is no real cure. There's no such thing as an ex-alcoholic or an ex-addict. Just people who beat the addiction day-by-day. :)

I've got an '82 D-46, and a '95 DCE5. Both are tremendous guitars. As for build quality, I can't tell the difference. It's as if the same guy built both guitars, 13 years apart.

OH gosh, women have horrible GAS, you guys know that. Never hear them, but peel the paint off the walls, then they just smile like someone else must have done it.....or blame it on the dog.

Of course you can tell they've farted when they're wearing pantyhose if they bubble at the knee

What was this thread about, anyway? :D

Any answer to this question is merely speculative - or subjective - either through bias of ownership or some other relative connection to a respective year....or era. I can say, as West previously posted, that FMIC didn't muck around with QC. But most of what was implemented was already being done - just never documented as a 'Spec'. Sometimes the difference was negligible - other areas were vastly improved, IMO.
Does that make a better guitar?

I can only speak of a certain period of time. Obviously the Gruhn/Walker era was stable and foreward thinking (some of my favorite designs). And there is certainly much to be praised of NYC & Hoboken lore. But the "wild child" period during the Faas ownership needed a good smackin'!

....but what years were those...?

Graham,
I guess its usually referred to as US Music ('89 - '95)
And not to disparage those entire six years (to the contrary - enormous factory talent & dedication)
Its the closing chapters of that time that were both fragile & unsettling - leadership wise.

What became of the old factory Hide? A few years ago, I was checking out Westerly websites, and came upon a real estate company which had the Westerly plant listed....dirt cheap. Seems like between $100,000 to $150,000 or something.

How about we buy the rights back, the building and appoint you general manager? I might even move up there from Texas to work for you.
