When the finish finally cracks around an old pickguard (one that has been finished over), and the thing finally peels off to reveal the bare wood underneath, the guard can be a bit warped around the edges..curving down somewhat towards the guitar top. So, when you finish that bare wood with laquer is there anyone that has put that same pickguard back on the top over the new laquer? Does anyone have a tried method of flattening out the original pickguard so it will make good contact with the top? Heating it with something flat weighted on top sounds like a possibility, but I certainly don't want to melt it! Anyone done this with success? I'd really like to use the original rather than make a copy.

I'm no expert, but I suspect you'll have to replace the guard. If it's old and shrinking/deteriorating it will probably continue to do so. I've tried without success to flatten a warped PG for an ES125 and finally replaced it. Lots of nice materials available out there to make one though, and places that will make one for you to your tracing out of the materials of your choice.

Brian,
What kind of guitar is it? I have a Guild acoustic guitar guard in tortiose that I bought for a repair job but it was the wrong size. My guitar is an F212XL and the guard was for a D25, 35 ,40 etc. It is too small for me and I would just mail it to you if it is what you need. My pickguard was glued to the bare wood on my guitar and it was shrinking and caused a top crack. It was a bear to get off. Look at my thread on the F212XL project and see. I agree with Joe about not using the old guard. There are many suppliers that sell replacement pickguards for acoustics and electrics. I use lmii.com and stewmac.com but as Joe said there are many others.

Brian, I took the pickguard off of my F4 with warm air from a blow-dryer, ironed it between a couple of pieces of cotton cloth, and glued it back.
Remarkably easy.
Looks great again and I don't think anyone would be able to tell...
