those look amazing Grot!
and thanks everyone for chiming in, even if you were a tad annoyed at my post. Just cause I will never understand that does not mean your feelings are not valid.

lol

Well I wasn't annoyed at you. Just cranky in general, and in spite of that sometimes the best answer to a question is the question you should have asked i.e. which bass?

But when it was Lets Talk Beers we did get to watch over your shoulder while you tried things so what are you going to try?

Oh I am just complaining Frono...I never get miffed at any of my friends on LTG.

Yes, I am down to 2 main hobbies at the moment, when I have time I mean, which is not a lot...bass guitar and cold beer. Sadly, I seem to post the same absurd questions over on beeradvocate.com lol

what kind of questions could u possibly have about cold beer? how to make it colder? how to drink it faster? how to get it delivered to your house in less than 20 minutes? man there is a forum for everything these days.

I’m mainly an electric guitplayer.

I’ve bought a bass to play on some home recordings.

Naturally I went down the Guild road and ended up with a pilot and then I found the below 302 which I find pretty comfortable to play and certainly suits my needs.

Hey I think those are my two main hobbies too! Can I include "synths" with bass? I definitely frequent various forums for both bass & synths, but it never occurred to me to look at beer forums - look what you've done!

If you are looking at new Newark Starfires your choices are a Starfire I in the "new" configuration with a different bridge/tail piece, P pass PU or a Starfire II. A new Starfire I would be cheaper. We don't have a lot of experience with unmodified versions but everyone here thinks they are worth investigating. You could be the pioneer.

I have yet to play the new Starfire I with the split coil pickup, but bass reviewer extraordinaire LowEndLobster actually just deemed it his favorite new bass of 2021 in his end-of-year worst/best video (below). Worth noting that he likes basses across all scale-lengths, construction styles, and string numbers.

Now that I think about it, if I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now and trying and owning all the basses I have had, I would probably just buy a Guild Starfire II and use the neck pickup. It can play any style with that neck pickup. Sounds fantastic. And the weight is light and the scale is short, which makes it a very comfortable bass. Plus, Guilds have some of the coolest headstocks around.
I mean, I would not sell my other basses I have now (3), but if I had to do it all over again I would just get a Starfire II. And yes, they have their built in issues, but when you get them worked out, it is a great bass that can play all styles. It also sounds just as good as the big guns in the industry (Pbass/Ric bass/Gibson bass), and I got the sound files to prove it!!!:)(y)
