John Mayall has been doing something similar for years.
If he wants to make his guitars lighter, then that’s up to him. It’s his guitar, so he can do what he likes.

My profile is a pic of the Slim Jim I had in the 60s. It was originally a cherry colour, until I took an electric sander to it.

Did it make the guitar sound better? NO

Did it make the guitar play better? NO

Did it make me happier playing the guitar? YES

That lowest added strap button makes me think he may have also used the guitar as a standing lap steel.
