They are right up there! When I lived in Vancouver I constantly saw different goldens being trained downtown as seeing eye dogs by workers from the Vancouver school for the visually impaired. They put little vests on them that say ''Please don't pet me, I'm working!'' It takes some serious brainpower to navigate busy intersections during rush hour but they are up for the task.

That's right, the Retriever surpassed the German Shepherd as seeing eye dog some time back. Better temperament, a little calmer maybe, til they see waterfowl ;]
The military and police dog of choice now is the Belgian Malinois, again, surpassing the German Shepherd, which just happens to be my favorite dog, childhood memories.
Our neighbor down the road with about 50 goats has a pair of Malinois that replaced her Pyrenees, she said her dog food bill went down by half ;]
Livestock dogs are pretty hard working here. We got coyotes, cougars, and wolves, and as it turns out, coyotes and wolves are breeding, enter the Coywolf.
