I was wondering...

Is that ramp laminated? Or did they bend solid wood?

Christopher
I think, if you look very closely at the exposed end of the ramp by the pins, it appears it's constructed according to the usual bowling alley techniques, but it's edge to edge lamination not sandwich construction. Think that's got an effect on the rolling characteristics of the skulls?

I see...bentwood laminate. Genius, pure genius! Al, you have quite possibly identified the origins of the coatrack, or maybe even the bentwood rocker.

Humidity would definitely play a role in the accuracy of the aim, as would all that moisture coming in contact with the wood over time.

Being designed for the out-of-doors (I assume, anyway), the wooden ramp was likely heavily oiled; but with what? Surely they would not have attempted to use a shellac. It simply wouldn't hold up.

Good question, Joe.

I think rock maple would have been my choice for the ramp, with a contrasting rail of something darker. Rosewood would be lovely, as would walnut, wouldn't you think.

Were these facilities commissioned works, I wonder? Or perhaps custom "one off's"?

Tar, duh. Like on the boats. Why the ramp's so steep. Helps prevent "seizing" of the "ball".

Is the ramp rosewood or mahogany?
Inquiring minds, you know.

Joe

Give the estimated age of the installation I might go so far as to suggest Brazilian Rosewood although it is hard to determine from just the picture.
