I'm sorry to admit this, but for me that song is Sweet Caroline. Not because I have anything against Neil Diamond's music or over-saturation, but I used to play in a band with a keyboard player that would bring that song out as his "go-to" and he just did a godawful version (like a parody) that I detested so much, it ruined the song for me.
That's what I'm talking about!! See? Vent!!! I get you.....

Good morning

Sorry Tom, I didn't mean to step on anybody's toes by calling this a "snobbish attitude"... What I was trying to say is that I presume there seems to exist some kind of code amongst guitar players to dislike this song, and this code has the function to distinct the "true" guitar player from the wannabe showoff kids. And wherever such codes develop to classify into "inside and outside", snobism lurks around the corner. But maybe I'm wrong?

Of course anyone has the right to like or dislike songs for (almoust) whatever reason.

What I totally get though is when you evolve aversions out of personal experiences, such as Grassdog did. Things like this can totally ruin even the best songs!

Ok, I'll play along:

There are a couple of Queen songs that I originally liked a lot, such as "Killer Queen", "Play The Game" or "One Vision". Now one beautiful day many years ago, I let myself be persuaded by a woman I loved to attend the musical "We Will Rock You". It was terrifyingly awful, I don't even know where to start. I disliked the storyline, the costumes, the loudness (normally I like it loud!), the audience, the acting, the dancing, the singing, the location, just everything. Actually that was no surprise, I never liked musicals much, but I thought hey let's give it a try, maybe this will change my mind? It did not.

But the worst part were the songs themselves, especially the ones sung in German. A mutilation of Queens epochal work, in every sense.

To make a long story short: Everytime I stumble upon something Queen-related, this traumatising experience comes to mind and spoils everything.

For those of you who whish to partially understand my pain, here is the album on spotify. Highly recommended are the songs with the annotation "deutsche Version". Caution: This might ruin your day ๐Ÿ˜…

I get you entirely. Just like I "don't get The Dead," there is a certain aversion to Queen/Freddie Mercury that I harbour. Maybe I was just too much into British blues rock at their time. Regards to both though, I highly value both guitarists high level of skill...

Which, brings to mind, why didn't that young man do Brian May's "Love Of My Life," that was done on a Guild 12...(trying to inhibit gag reflex) LOL

Speaking of Queen, here's what I consider to be a much cooler Brian May composition, "39", from A Night At the Opera. Not sure if Brian used a Guild F-412 on the original recording, but he does usually plan one live when he performs this song.

That reminds me, though I had the opposite reaction. Mrs. Cougar wanted to go see Mama Mia, you know, the musical built around ABBA songs. We were in Vegas many years ago. Mrs. Cougar got second row seats because, you know, she's just got to spend the most money on most anything.

I'm no fan of musicals, and though I don't hate ABBA, I'm no big fan either. So we went to this musical.

Oh. My. God. I was blown away. The singers for that performance were unbelievably good. They were much better than thin-sounding ABBA. It was really fantastic. The story, the plot, was... whatever, but the music... it was an experience! Mrs. Cougar really nailed it on that one!

The simple answer on that one is "because Las Vegas!".

๐Ÿ˜‚ yes, there must be something in the air there. How can you not like musicals and not be into abba and then be blown away? Miracles happen ๐Ÿ˜‚ I like your story cougar, whish the same happened to me ๐Ÿ˜…

Well, maybe I give it another try in Vegas, this must be the secret.

My Wife's company has a vendor who takes the top level office staff to NYC every year for dinner and a Broadway Show. I pretty much hate going to the City as I am very uncomfortable there, but you know how it is.

I must admit, while dinner can be slightly awkward, I really do enjoy the Broadway Shows. The first year they got tickets late and could only get tickets for "Frozen". Not having any kids I had not seen the movie so it was all new to me. The shows absolutely amaze me. Starting with the ingenious scenery systems. But the thing that really gets me is I have yet to hear any performer flub a word or miss a note! As a hack who has played for years in bar bands I'm lucky if I can make it through one song cleanly! These people are nigh perfect.

The next year we saw Ms. Saigon. which of course isn't a musical but an opera! Every word is sung. Once again, zero mistakes! I know, it's every day and twice on Wednesday but still, to achieve perfection blows my mine!

One Summer my Wife won a Sales Award and they treated us with lunch and a show with just us. We got to choose the show and my Wife let me pick "Beautiful" The Carole King story. Once again awesome!

This past Winter we went to see "Ain't To Proud" the Temptations musical. I had seen the movie it was modeled after and needless to say blown away again! The bassist plays continuously the whole night! He has to ice his plucking wrist down after every show.

Another example of this is that I grew up with The Beatles. It was and is part of the soundtrack of my youth. I always liked and appreciated their music, but I'm not a huge "Beatles Fan" with all that comes with that. Just appreciative of their music and influence. So the first time I went with family to see LOVE the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show at the Mirage Resort many years ago, I thought I was going to like it. Well, the show is amazing Cirque-wise, but also they have recordings and tracks that were never released and single vocal tracks that they put together and edited into an amazing show that actually showcases their music better than just playing their songs could do. Add to that the amazing visuals and the fun of Cirque and I was BLOWN AWAY!! So much so that when my sister and her husband came into town a year or so ago with my niece and they wanted to see it, I was more than happy to go see it again. Just as amazing the second time if not more so!! What an amazing experience!!

Personally, I like "Stairway" and coincidentally just played it today! Followed it up with "Over The Hills and Far Away".

Tom, I've only heard the "Love" CD, but I agree, the way they put the music together is great!

Here's the songs I would be happy not to hear again:

+1 on "Sweet Caroline". The fans screaming it at Red Sox games killed it for me.

Anything by Don McLean, especially "American Pie". *** edit- and "Vincent"! Just shoot me!

"Best of My Love" and "I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles. So very slow.... I don't mind "Hotel California", great guitar playing on it.

"Wonderful Tonight" - Eric Clapton - again, soooooooo slow..

This will be unpopular, but I never got Nirvana, except for maybe their "cultural" impact. Unlistenable for me.

...and lastly, the effing "Kars for Kids" jingle! Gah! Spell it right, for Chrissakes!
