It was filthy when I got it - covered in dust, needed new strings and a good dose of bore oil on the fretboard, but I think it cleaned up nicely.

This finish is damn near impossible to photograph well. It's beautiful in person, with the grain showing through the red, but that's very hard to capture. Plays nice, looks nice, and sounds nice.

It doesn't quite have that pure-sex tone I was hoping for, but I think trying to capture the tone of a '76 mahogany HB-1 equipped Starfire with a modern version is a fool's errand. I am that fool. :)

WOW!

Beautiful!!!

What pickups are under the hood? Are they original HB1's?

Another question - what oil do you use on your fretboard?

Thanks! It's got SD1s. It's too late for HB1s. This one is a '97. Last year I've personally seen with HB1s was '94.

I use Fret Doctor for my fretboards. I love it, and the fretboards seem to as well. I used lemon oil for years until I discovered that the stuff I was using had wax in it. This seems to work better, and darkens the fretboard over time as well.

I have the younger sister of this guitar (based on serial no's), also a '97 according to Hans. It also had SD-1s. I noticed a pretty big improvement when I dropped some HB-1s in (direct swap, no routing etc required), especially in the bridge position. I now find the guitar to be extremely satisfying (where's the smoking after good sex icon? ).

Great. So now I need to score some HB1s again, after finally selling the set I had in my closet for two years? Story of my life, right there.

GAD, I've got two sets for you to consider. Good news is your bezels and other hardware are a perfect match. I'm waiting to go into an appointment right now, but send me a note and im sure we can get you hooked up in no time flat.

I know that you in your blog had good things to say about the SD-1s so maybe it won't make a big as deal to you. I found the main improvement to be with the bridge pickup (which I use the most anyway). Just more defined, more punch, more clarity, more personality. The neck SD-1 sounded fine to be honest.

It's hard with pickups because your prejudices can get in the way of making an objective judgement but I don't think I was imagining the differences.

Just spent some quality time with this guitar and my Mission 5E3 amp. Nothing in between, just guitar, cable, amp.

Wow. On the neck pickup, this thing delivers. I daresay that I like it more than my coveted '00 Westerly Starfire with custom-wound pickups. The bridge pickup in this one is a bit harsh, though.

So, describe in detail this "pure -sex tone" you were hoping for.

Beautiful guitar.

LOL - I think the "sex tone" thing started in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=26247

The more I play this thing, the more I like it!
