So, I received two Guilds this week. You could call this thread "A Tale Of Two Descriptions/Ratings".
The 1st I received was a 1993 D 6. I already own a DV 6 which is basically the same guitar except for the Herringbone Rosette on the DV 6. But, this one was priced low (and I made an offer even lower that the seller accepted), and was described as excellent condition. Too good for me to pass up. The guitar arrived and it surely was not excellent, maybe not even very good and likely just plain old good. The headstock was all cloudy and the finish was peeling and yellowing like on a D 70 I recently posted about which was one Tom Jacobs repaired for me and now looks superb. In addition there were scratches, some finish checking and I think (but am not certain) a crack on the soundboard. The back and sides are in excellent shape and the Sitka Spruce top does have a bit of Bear Claw which I adore personally. The kicker, and most important to me, is that is sounded absolutely wonderful. Big and rich, similar, if not even better than my DV 6.
I got ahold of the seller and told him he was way off in his description. He's not a player or a musician and was helping his wife clear out her Father's belongings after he passed away. He agreed to give me a fairly sizable credit if I'd keep the guitar so I agreed to that. It will be on its way to Tom Jacobs and there is zero doubt in my mind it will look spectacular after he performs his magic tricks. I'll end up having into the guitar about what it is worth but I will have another wonderful sounding Guild. I may sell it, I may keep it. Time will tell I guess. I've attached a few pics. By the way, I'm also not sure of the differences between a D6/DV 6 and a D 40. Can somebody educate me???
The 2nd guitar I received was a 1993 Black D 30. I posted the Reverb listing for this a while back. He was overpriced and his shipping was outrageous but I talked him down to normalcy and bought the guitar. It was still on the high side of normal pricewise but I wanted that Black D 30. It will looks well with my Tennessee Orange and Walnut colored D 30's. This one was better than described. Neck angle is perfect and action is low with no buzzing. Honestly, it almost looks show room new, the case does as well. Needless to say I am thrilled with this pick up. I've attached a couple pics of that guitar as well.
