Hi there! New to Guilds, just picked up a 77 s300d that I’d like to restore back to original.

Three issues:

1) the headstock was burned in a fire and the mother of pearl inlays are gone and some of the black overlay is gone. Is there any source for a replacement headstock overlay? Or is my best bet to remove the remaining overlay, paint the headstock black and just settle for a fake mother of pearl chesterfield water slide decal?

2) anyone have a source for original style 3 screw pickup rings for the DiMarzio pickups?

3) any source on replacement or original knobs that aren’t $30 plus each?

thanks for any information or advice!

Hello Zduck,

Welcome! I can help you out with most of the parts, but I'm located in the Netherlands and the postal service is a mess these days.
Where are you located?

Sincerely,

Welcome Zduck, nice guitar and cool project you have there! You found the right place for your questions, lots of Guild knowledge gathers here (not me though). Let us know how you proceed!

I have seen those replacement overlays pop up on ebay from time to time. It might be tricky trying to blend it in sympathetically with the wood that's worn/burned away at the upper corners of the headstock. BTW - original inlays were pearloid on these, which is probably why they perished in the fire.

I would replace the rings and knobs, leave the headstock alone, and play the hell out of that guitar. :) Having an S300 that I could leave hanging or in the corner would be a cool thing to have!

Congrats on the guitar and for wanting to fix her up!

A suggestion...

Given the extensive damage you could consider using standard two hole black pickup bezels and simply unsolder the two hole tab that was soldered to Dimarzio pickup. So for a few $ you can remove the metal pickup flanges.

Headstock...that is another hard to come by item. I've seen them sell for $150 when they do come up on ebay. Consider a plain black cover and add a Guild sticker that you can get on eBay or Guitar Center.

Knobs...another tricky item. You might luck out and see them on eBay or possibly the Guild web store.

TRC...their are some S300's on eBay or you can add an inexpensive copy from eBay without the model markings to have the correctly shaped TRC.

The above recommendation can get your guitar in the ball park of normal and then over time watch out for an occasional bargain on stock items.

haha it was the sellers dads guitar originally who passed and he sadly didn’t know the story behind it but my guess is a firework attached to the headstock situation or some Hendrix

This all makes a lot of sense. With the damage to the headstock it will never be a mint condition original, so I shouldn’t probably spend a ton of money on original parts. I paid 700 Canadian for it btw.

I pulled the control cavity and found that it was white originally?! Interesting!

I've seen a lot of Guilds from this era with the wrong covers on the control cavity. I have no idea why, but it's easily the fifth or sixth I've seen. Hell, I even had or have one.

My '71 JS didn't even have a label on the control cavity cover and it left the factory that way.

And the inside of the control cavity is cherry...
What's the note say?
The cherry was handpainted over the white and over the copper foil and even drops on the one tone pot, see the two arrows left and right. So it was white before.
That paper note again would be intersting to see what's written on it. Did you notice that unusal pickup selector switch?

An old Washburn bass had the same switch:
