The mystery deepens.

A guitar with that serial number should have the triangular "DuoJet-like" control cover. They changed the shape to rectangular when the added the phase switch to allow better access. A phase switch and triangular cover would be very strange indeed.

You are right, the guitar has indeed the triangular cover:

I'm betting it's spruce too. Most of the early ones are. I'm not even sure if I've seen a maple one with a number less than 100.

It would be very interesting to see the other guitar with the same serial number.

Sorry guys, I typically get to work by 6 a.m. home by 6 etc.

Last few days tho I've been waking up around 10, office at 11 head home at 4, crash till 10-10:30...like tonight.

I'll pop it open tomorrow and post pix. I did strum it, not sure if it;s my fatigue or what but it's heavy. And based on the picture of the back it needs quite the buffing!!

Man, so gorgeous, beecee. Congratulations on a great snag. I'm truly envious!

Black and chrome is my favorite color scheme. I've always wanted a Gibby LP custom with white binding and chrome hardware. So far, my Bluesbird fits the bill, but now I'm gonna have to keep my eyes out for a black and chrome Nightbird II or CS, or better yet a Nightingale, if they exist in that configuration.

Isn't Life Strange - Moody Blues

Pardon for musical veer - but it just happens to have perfect title.

Viva la difference - or however it is spelled correctly - I never liked black instruments - and I can remember my days at James Berns ( RIP ) Music Store in MN - we had about 700 guitars - and when someone came in with "all the money" and "I want Les Paul" - we could have betted our house - granparents - the whole continent - that he/she ends wit black les Paul Custom with chrome parts . . .

And we did have a tobacco sunburst Les Paul Artist with gold parts in stock . . . And a Les Paul Artisan . . . and . . .

Well, if you have all the money, and the LP Custom is the top model, you have to go for black and chrome perfection . . . just like one of these.

Although I'd rather have a Guild instead of an LP :C)

Those days LP Custom was not at all the top model - if price-list was any measure 😅

I've never disliked black guitars but I'd not go out of my way for one. I did buy a few from GC, (An F-65ce and a D-25) and they were just too beat up. This had no picture but the price was right on it, I knew it was black but if it was a pooch I would leave it at the store.

Well, very clean...very clean....but black...meh...but I do prefer black/chrome to black/gold

Funny....I'm getting some Peter Frampton vibe from this black beauty today, been strumming a bit on couch in between chores...(went up a ladder today 13')...wife not happy...so feeling better. Going grab a quick bite and open up the back of the guitar.

Post pix tonight...anything particular to look for in that little space

Ah. I always thought it was usually the most expensive of the LP variations outside of special models like Artisans or special run editions.

When I see those I always think of the black beauty on Al Dimeola’s elegant gypsy album

You might be right in that LP Custom was always there - year after year - while some more expensive models came and went.

The Vincent was an absolutely amazing machine, incredibly advanced design for the time! Always makes me think of Richard Thompson's song 1952 Vincent Black Lightning:cool:

Beecee, you didn't get a picture of that note you found inside by any chance? That note, if authentic, could explain some of the oddities of this guitar. If the note is from Kim Walker to GG there could be some historic significance to this guitar. The original designers!

I'm sure that if you were to give Kim a call he 'd fill in the missing pieces. I've spoken to him before and he is a nice guy.
