I know that the Oxnard plant will eventually put out some amazing guitars, But I couldn't pass on owning one more piece of Magic from New Hartford. If they revive the Orpheum line in Oxnard, they may be better than the originals and they may be worse, whatever the case is, they won't be New Hartford. Thanks to Keith7940236 for giving my 77 G212 a wonderful home to free up space for me to make this purchase.
I have been watching this guitar on and off for the last 5 months wondering if Rocky would drop the price enough to make it irresistible for me to purchase. Needless to say He finally did. I had made a previous post about a Brand New 14 fret Sloped Hog Orpheum at my local Guild dealer that didn't sound up to par. I can honestly say that the Jumbo is a completely different guitar much to my liking. Besides, How can you turn down a square mile of Adirondack on the top?
Everyone talks about the Orpheum Neck width at 1 3/4", which I thought would not work for me with my left shoulder/arm problems. Truthfully the neck feels no different than my F50R or my D55 Anniversary. I don't know if I got lucky and this is the only Orpheum with this neck width or if my other guitars are wider than they should be, Regardless it feels great. The top has a beautiful grain to it with some silking present. I love the Natural colored Mahogany back and sides.
Tone and setup out of the case was not bad but I knew she had more in her. The factory strings sounded like they were choking the guitars top when you played it. They were very restrictive and had no brilliance what so ever. I changed them out to my new Favorite Martin Monel Bluegrass set and with a small neck adjustment as well as shaving the saddle slightly she rings like a bell. Wonderful clear focused lows and a nice blend of Mid to high range that only comes from Adirondack. This guitar is a full pound lighter than my F50R and very responsive as well as very versatile. This guitar is Extremely Resonant and I can only imagine that it will open up even more over time. The subtle nuances of playing finger style bring out her sweeter side while Flat picking and strumming really let her sing! My only gripe would be that the tuners are not on par with the build quality of the guitar. They seem to drag a bit on the the wound low strings. I may change them out in the near future for a nicer set to compliment the guitar. Also am considering putting a Guild Traditional style Pickguard on her as well seeing as I'm not sold on the teardrop. I will try to get a sound clip up this week, until then here are some photos for everyone.
This last pic is what I like to call "My Fat Bottomed Girls"!
