Hmm, interesting that Corona was using the 1953 beginning date. Maybe this is where Fender first "revised" history. I always thought they changed to 1953 for the 60th Anniversary.
I was gathering data to start a thread on the 1952-1953 issues and my conclusion so far is that Fender made the switch between 1997 and 2003. The 45th is dated 1997 but the 50th is dated 2003. One of the Fender era dating charts has a headline 1953-1960 but a table entry for 1952 showing maybe 350 serial numbers. Another has a heading 1952-1920 but the first entry in 1953.
And now the change: Year 2003 Guild catalog:

Interesting comment about your 1977 model, awagner. I think it's possible that a neck from that era would've been made from padauk rather than mahogany -- as most other D-55s are made from.
Me too, Glenn. I just gave up on finding a birth year Guild. Not sure I'd want a guitar as old as me..... LOL!!I prefer the sound of "1953" myself -- the year I was born.
There's a very, very, very slight chance I may one day find a birth year guitar (that's assuming I'd even be able to afford it if I did); if I'd been born in 1952, impossible.
And, since I was born in 1951, I can buy all the Guilds I want but will never be able to have a birth year guitar. And, as hard as it is to believe, I'm actually too young to get a birth year Martin or Gibson.
