I've owned numerous D 55's over the years and personally find them to be one of the consistently good models Guild produced. Some might be a bit more soulful but I've never had a bad one.

It's also one of the first models I sell when I need to raise cash for a new guitar adventure and that seems to happen often at my house. I sell them not because I don't like them but because they are a pretty easy sell, people tend to want them and will pay a fair price for them and most importantly they are nearly always available to buy again if the mood hits you.

This is a 1999 build and sonically it is pretty special. It has some honest playwear on the soundboard and I'm ok with that. A guitar that shows signs of use is not at all a turn off to me as long as they are priced fairly and I believe this one was. The back and sides are really clean. There are a couple capo marks on the neck that I may or may not have cleaned up.

Here's a few pics.

That’s some nice straight rosewood on that one Richard. Sonically special - how so? From your experience is there much difference based on the time period or have you found it just comes down to the individual guitar.

For me, I think the individual guitar. I've had good/great D 55's out of numerous Guild factories. Like I say, every D 55 I've owned has sounded really good. Some, just a bit more so than others, This one has a deep, full sound and the sustain is pretty impressive. It may not be the best D 55 I've ever owned but I would say it's in the top 3.

Congrats! The D-55 will always be the quintessential Guild acoustic for me.

I have owned dozens of Guilds. To my ear the post Fender Westerly builds were some of their very best.

Agree Pike and I have a 2000 D55 and put it up for sale, locally, to fund a 2013 F50R. We shall see.

I found my 1998 D55 when I wasn't really looking at Guilds. I was looking at Taylors and Martins and this one was tucked up way up high. Took it down and it wasn't long before I decided to bring her home. Hands down my favorite guitar and would put it up against any high end Taylor or Martin anyway. The condition is near mint for a 24 year old guitar and I feel was way underpriced due to it being not one of the big three in name.

Nice one Rich. I have never owned or played a D-55 but they have always been on the list. Great find. I’m with you. I’ll take some play wear all day as long as price reflects.
