I noticed that the Volume and Tone knobs are laid out the "Gibson" way, though, instead of the "Guild" way, like my old T-100D. Anybody know what's up with that? Did Guild switch at some point?

Did he have anything to say about the control knob arrangement?

Nothing here looks unusual to me. What is it you guys think is unusual/different?

The control knobs on this one are laid out just like my S-100's. What was the arrangement like before (e.g., on a T-100D)?

Hi guys,

Regarding the knobs - on my T-100-D the volume knobs are above the F-hole (closer to the bridge) and the tone knobs are below the F-hole. I always just figured that was the way Guild did it but maybe it's my guitar that is weird? It appears stock and is from 1964.

On this guitar the bridge pickup volume and tone are below the F-hole and the neck pickup volume and tone are above the F-hole. This is the same arrangement I'm used to from playing Gibsons.

I don't know. I was just going with what 77Eric said!

I don't have a two pick-up guitar here with me to compare it to. Now we're going to have to see photos of 77Eric's knob arrangement.

OK guys, here's the pic:

See how the Volumes are above the F-hole whereas the OP's Volumes are on the right? And it's not a case of the knobs being swapped - that's how mine is wired. Mine is the only Guild I've ever played so I don't know what arrangement is the usual or if Guild used both?

That is one sweet Starfire. I would love to play that maple Starfire back to back with my 1973 mahogany Starfire to hear the difference. As I have said before the difference between my 73 S-100 and the Starfire are more than I expected. I don't know if it is in the pickups or just the different bodies.
Congratulations John

I'm not sure if it is just a Guild thing, but both Hoboken X-175's I once had were arranged as yours is. One was a 1961, and the other a 1966.

Sweet, sweet guitar Qvart. Congratulations!

My 63 CE100D has the same vol/tone arrangements as you have there. My 66 SFV on the other hand has the more standard arrangement. Maybe it was changed or maybe it was dependent on which factory worker did the wiring!

I don't think Hans will mind if I post a quote from a PM:

Guild did them both ways during different periods.

There ya go. All the Guilds I've played have the knobs arranged like this SFIV and my S-100's. Haven't played anything (or payed attention to anything else) from the time when they set the knobs up differently.

My 1956 Aristocrat was the first one wired like the picture that Eric posted. I also had asked Hans and he told me he has seen both ways. It looks like that in the 50ies and still 60ies some Guilds were wired with the volume knobs both above the f-hole (or towards the strings) so to say. The logic behind was that the left (in playing position) volume and tone knob pair controlled the neck pickup and the right volume and tone knob pair controlled the bridge pickup.
My 1967 Starfire also has the "new wiring" like on Qvart's guitars, where both volume knobs are towards the neck and both tone knobs are towards the tailpiece of the guitar. Logic behind could be that the pickup selector switch position towards the player also activates the upper volume/tone pot pair for the neck pickup, whereas the pickup selector switch position downwards activates the lower side volume/tone pot pair for the bridge pickup.
That is the usual way for most today I would say. So the one Eric has is the old way I think and not "the Guild way" as he described it.

I've been intrigued more by the mahogany SF's than the maple ones, and I would have liked to snag one with a Guildsby, but when this sunburst came along and I was able to talk the seller down a bit I couldn't resist. I'll have to do some actual comparing, but I was pretty surprised at how different this guitar feels and sounds (in my mind) to playing S-100s. All I can say is, the sound is THICK. I mean, the SFIV has the same pickups but it's quite a bit different. The semi-hollow construction definitely makes a difference. My two S-100s sound virtually the same even though there are differences in design and the 'hog on the '77 is much heavier than the 'hog on the '73.

Yep, I believe I'll be entertained for awhile with this one.

So I just looked at all my arch-tops and they all have the same knob arrangement as Qvart's Starfire with the two Volumes by the bridge straddling the f-hole and the Tone knobs behind them. Including my '66 T-100D.

Thanks for posting the photo 77Eric, that's the first time I've ever seen that layout. Always something new to learn about Guilds!

Done. And done.

Too bad my Marshall is on the fritz. And too bad I just blew money on another guitar instead of a new amp/head. This thing deserves much better than the little Peavey (which honestly isn't all that bad of an amp, but it makes for a better cat bed than rock machine).
