So, we discussed this a few days ago. This is the one where Shelby (aka stuball) went and picked up the guitar for me and mailed it to me. Thanks Shelby, you're a good guy.
This was one of those split second decisions with little thought, questions or investigation on my part. You seldom see them and since I had never owned one wanted it regardless.
The seller was a Reverb newbie but after lots of gyrations and missteps I got it into my cart. I paid full boat and did not make an offer. I bought it going in blind but I did so knowingly. The seller represented it as very good condition but I think that was generous. I would likely have classified it as good condition. It's seen some battles and wear in its day. There are a couple soundboard cracks and one on the back as well where the neck meets the body. There is binding shrinkage and some binding cracks/splits primarily on the fingerboard. There is also some wear down to the wood on the top of the headstock. The jury is still out whether a neck reset is needed but if it is I'll do it. I love the coral look on this one. I had a DV 73 with similar inlays but this one seems less in your face or pronounced. It seems more subdued and I like it personally.
So, all in all, not a collector piece but beautiful (at least in my eyes) all the same. This will be going down to Tom Jacobs to see what he can do about improved repairs of the cracks noted, likely some wood repair/refinish in spots and perhaps a neck reset. I'm willing to bet it will look like a different guitar when I get it back.
Here's a couple of pics:
