Thanks all for the messages and advice! Such a cool community.

Is this the original base? What about these lunky tuning machines? The peg heads totally look out of place.

Does the guitar say "Special" on label? Very cool, the Deluxe Kolb tuners!!!

Why is it a special? did it have a Guildsby? or is it the DeArmond instead of a Franz? the tuners? thanks!

also I see now it was shipped out of Philly, not UK. still no box...mental

That "packaging" is ridiculous! What? Does the guy think that the shipping company employees assign a soft cushion to each package and carry them carefully around the facility? No possible excuse for sending something so fragile that way.

And I'd be particularly incensed if the guitar smells like pepperoni...

I think it is original.

Very cool tuners! See Hans book page 41 upper row middle picture. The tuner buttons were designed by Gilbert Diaz!
Tuners made by ROKO in Germany.

Looks like the one on my 1962 Starfire II. Good purchase on the Starfire! I was thinking about buying it but instead made an offer and you purchased it before they responded. Glad you got it and it is within the LTG community! Really good price even with the harp tailpiece and bad shipping. Enjoy!

I would certainly ask the seller/ebay for a partial refund, considering the damage together with the lack of packing. It looks like it was mailed from England to USA like that with no box? I would ask for full shipping refund + 20 percent back on the sale. Ebay should have your back. good luck, and, congrats

In some circumstances, sure -- but look at what he paid for it, and the circumstances. This is already a victory.

sure, if you are looking for a 5 string guitar, when you paid for 6. Now a replacement tailpiece will cost extra money, not be orignal, and not necassarily be an exact match (chrome vs. nickel, etc). He paid a great price, sure, but that is if it shows up not damaged, and packaged in acceptable fashion. Maybe he still did pretty good, but that wasn't the deal...

If the seller said, "this is a great price, but it could show up damaged, and i'm only mailing it in the case from 1961 and no additional packaging," ...then it would be a fair deal

Those are great guitars.....
I have a '61 Starfire II with the mahogany body that tells me so.....

Interesting to see the Kolb tuners.....and for me there's a lot to like with the single pickup version.
