Hey everybody,

I have what I hope is a pretty simple question. I've recently started experimenting with alternate tunings, and today I tuned up to open E. Is it OK to leave the guitar tuned up above standard tuning? Should I relax some string tension until the next time I play? The guitar is a Martin 000 28 EC.

Wondering if there is any danger to the guitar leaving it with increased string tension.

TIA,

Chris.

I wouldn't leave the guitar tuned up to open E when not playing. One way is to tune to open D, and if you need to go up to E, then capo on the second fret.

Thanks everybody,

I'll be using the capo. I didn't like increasing the string tension, I like the capo much better.

That guit should be sturdy enough if you're using light enough strings, probably not worth the risk with mediums. With a 12 first & a 52-54 sixth, it may be okay, but I don't think Martin builds them as heavy as they used to. Everybody else is right, a capo is cheaper.
