Hi Penner,
I have a Guild D4 12-String and it sings. I am very happy with it and I would think the 6-string version is the same. It's basically the same guitar. I've seen D4's on E-Bay for around $300. It isn't as fancy as the D series, but a great guitar all the same. Glen www.myspace.com/glenmurschel

Okay folks...I got the DV-52. It turned out to be quite a saga, and it's yet to be resolved. But here's the condensed version. I bought it on E-Bay, just before Christmas. Shipping at that time of year is chaos. I was going on vacation to visit family in FLA and decided to have it shipped there. It arrived on schedule, the day I arrived. That night I open the box and the case...sooooooo very excited (remember this is my FIRST Guild). As soon as I open the case, my heart sinks...there's several BIG dings in the top that were not in the photos or description. The seller put the original white bridge pins in the storage compartment of the case (they had been replaced with black ones on the guitar). Apparently during shipping, the storage case hatch opened up just enough and one of the pins weaseled out and got loose in the case. This is the OHSC (arch top), but Fed Ex must have put a few gorillas and elephants on top of it because the pin got pinched and put several big dings in the top. What a drag! I have photos but don't know how to attach them (being a newbie). Fortunately the seller has been VERY responsive and sympathetic. We're trying to work out a deal with FedEx for damage money. If it works out, I'll keep it. I'm taking it to a Guild dealer/luthier (Spruce Tree in Madison, WI) to get an estimate and to have it totally checked out to be sure the bracing and top were not harmed in any other ways.

Other than the gouges, it's in nice shape. I totally LOVE the tone. DEEP bass response compared to my other guitars and a beautiful, mellow shimmer (can you say "Westerly"?

It's been quite an ordeal, and I hope it all works out in the end. Should know in another week or so...

Wish me luck.

So I just figured out how to get the photo as my "avatar"...so you can see the king of the dings.
If I keep the guitar, I'm naming it Richard Dent (all-pro lineman for the Chicago Bears)!!!

What a bummer. Note to self..insist on all case candy in a zip lock bag in the case compartment.

Dang Penner! I feel very fortunate not to have experienced that ordeal. A good luthier should be able to take care of it, but still... Good luck with FedEx; those DV52s are awesome guitars.

Darn good suggestion, FNG...

OH, boy. Sorry to hear about the damage.

But congrats on the guitar.

A luthier can drop fill those spots, but it may not look "perfect." In any case, you'll have to decide... Hopefully you'll choose to keep it and maybe get a break on the price from the seller (even if it's the fault of shipping). It sounds like the guitar was abused during shipment, as I can't imagine how some loose bridge pins could cause that kind of damage.

But, that said, if a luthier gives it the thumbs up, structurally, you could have a fine player on your hands. DV-52 gets a lot of love around here from those who own 'em. I don't think I've ever heard a disappointed owner.

Sam Ting happened to a gorgeous D55 that West R Lee pushed me outta the way to get from The Podium, not that I mind.

Anyway, if you can get past the blemishes or have them repaired somewhat, I think you will be amazed at the guitar. DV52 was my first Guild as well and appears to be the only dread I'll ever need.

Enjoy!

Bad luck Pen-man ... :( What about Armand Hammer .... or Brad Pit ... Stay after Federal Excess ... they need to pay some claims; sooner or later, it will stop being cheaper to pay claims than it would be to teach cargo handlers how to deal with the Dropsies ... or the Crunchies ... or the Oopsies  CJ

Bluepin,
Sorry to hear about the pin-divots in your new DV-52! I have heard several similar stories... one of my own, my D-55 arrived with an allen wrench loose in the case. Didn't do a lot of damage (there are a few marks that might be attributed to it). On the other hand, the -10F weather it shipped thru resulted in some pretty severe finish checking.

My D-46 also took some divots from a loose pin during shipping from a shop to its previous owner. He had them drop filled... not perfect (and I think could be done better), but you wouldn't notice them unless you looked for them. So don't despair... Hope its works out well for you.

I'd get those touched up, drop filled. My F50 has had a compression dent in it from the latch. Since the 70s. I put a heart shaped sticker over it, shortly after that. Recently I was talking to one of the luthiers at The Blue Guitar, in San Diego, they seem brilliant, and can rebuild a 200 year old guitar that has been splintered. (check their web site) Anyway the guy said It was good that the sticker was there as it kept the dirt out. They can do a pretty good match. I think he also said they would paint a little glue on it 1st to keep the wood from absorbing too much product, color. That last bit might have been from another luthier who was telling me how to do it. Good luck with your wonderful adoptee. Steffan :D

Steffan and Dave-

How do they "drop fill"? Is it just a clear compound to fill the ding? I took it to my shop today, a very respected repairman and he said he couldn't do anything to them because it's satin finish. If it was gloss he said he could. I was surprised, but couldn't question him.

Can you fill me in? (get it?)

Thanks Penner
