but I dont understand that the edges (or sides) of the frets are very sharp. I cut my thumb sliding up and down the fretboard a couple of times.

Hi Tony,

After purchasing my Guild X-700 early this year, I realized that it was due for a re-fret. It too had the same sharp ended frets and they wer quite low - probably from several fret dressings. I had the benefit of playing my other Guilds with different fret sizes: X-500 .103" x .046" and the X-150/x-170 with the narrower and slightly shorter .084" x .039"

I must admit, I really liked the feel of the X-500's jumbo size frets. As the X-700 frets were quite worn, it was hard to assess what size it originaly had (a 1996 specimen). I decided on the larger fret size. I took it to a luthier/technician that prefered Dunlops and we agreed on the Dunlop 6150 frets. I enjoy the smaller frets as well and like that I have variety in fret sizes for my Guild archtops. I put Thomastik Infeld Jazz 12's on the X-700 which gives a great jazzbox sound - at least for my taste.

I'll have to post pictures of my blonde. I see, though, that there are no sunburts posted. I almost bought one too instead of the blonde ...

BillyD,

The girl utterly smoked my brain.

Back on topic: I'm a business consultant and the simple truth is that companies pressed for $$ can get sloppy with their work. In an effort to make sales and get instruments out the door, Guild could have gotten a little loose with finishing, even on the X-700. Guild seems like it was an iffy ride at points, and I'm sure that they wouldn't have sold to Fender unless they just had to.

Beautiful guitars though, jeez! Well worth fifty bucks to get fixed, especially for the relative bargain prices they can be had for.

So is my memory correct that 1994 was the first year for these and mine (AK000016) a '94?

Yup! 1994 was the first year for the X-700 and your guitar is from that first year although the serial number should be # AK700016.

Hans I am looking forward to part II of your book. I just hope it doesn't stimulate as much as the first one to go guildhunting!

And Guilderagain, my x700 has relatively large frets. I think these were original. I don't see any signs of a refret (it could have been done very professionally but then it doesn't make any sense they didn't pay any attention to the edges)

I will try to post some pics - don't have a camera...

In the meantime, where could i find that blonde?

And Tony, I'd say mine are pretty large frets, too:

Hey Dan, I notice your switch tip and mounting ring, as well as the master vol. knob are a bit different than mine... (I've got too much time on my hands since getting laid off!) BTW, sure is a pretty guitar you've got there (and presumably a nice camera, too. Mine's a real struggle to shoot close-up).

Hello kakerlak,

Yes, I am aware of those mistakes. There are quite a few in my database. They were bound to happen with all the different 'systems within the system'. It looks like 'Joe' was not yet used to the 'new' system, in which the model number became part of the serial number.

Sincerely,

Hmmm, no idea. I am not the original owner so I guess it's possible mine are replacements? I always just assumed they were original to the guitar. I guess it would also be possible that Guild changed things up along the course of production?? Either way, good eye for detail! And of course my guitar is pretty...it looks just like yours!

"This happens when a guitar is not properly humidified. The previous owner is the likely culprit ... More than likely, you should allow the guitar to become properly humidified ... But remember, a properly humidified guitar is a happy one!"

Jazzmang, et al,

Sage advice I'm sure. I've seen humidifiers for acoustic round hole guitars. Are there humidifiers for archtops? Also, what is considered a good humidity range? Of concern is the X-700 soundboard, and yes, the fret board too.

Thanks,

Alex

The advantage here is that even if not properly dressed you're unlikely to cut your hands up.

I dunno... She looks pretty sharp to me.

YES!!!!! He was a character in a Dutch comedy-sketch show called "Jiskefet" that was just brilliant. But all in Dutch, and it really doesn't translate.
True, but I thought that bit was pretty funny, even though I don't speak Dutch.
