hello!

i would like to introduce my self, my name is ike and i am brand new to this board.
as you might notice by my bad english, i am from germany.

i have registered to this board, because i am looking for lots of good informations on a Guild D25 acoustic guitar. i had once the chance to play one a couple of month ago, and since this time i am searching for one here in germany.

last week, I found one that was reachable for me, so I bought it. and exactly here is the point on which i need your help….

i do know, that Guild has started to build the D25 in the good old days before Fender bought Guild. i think that was in 1995. since then Guilds are not Guilds anymore but so called “Fender-Guilds”. i have red, after Fender took over Guild, the quality of the Fender-Guild guitars decreased.
is that true on all those guitars or does is appear to those couples of Guilds made after (Fender) Guild was moved to corona in 2001?

all Guild D25 that i ran across, have been made in RI and all of them have been either in natural finish or in a cherry-colored finish.
and here is my second question. all Guild D25 that i have seen had “D25” or “D25 CH” written on its lables inside the guitar. the D25 that I bought is in tobacco burst and the pre-owner told me it has a mahagony top. if so, should the lable inside should read “D25 M” right?
well if so, it does not on the guitar that i bought. it simply reads D25. does this mean it was simply not written in, or does it mean its an spruce top? I have found a pic on the i-net, showing nearly the same grain as my Gild has on its top –maybe you could judge this better than me…

talking about Guilds, there is one more thing that comes to my mind…

here in germany we can have a Guild DV-4 – I have red that those guitars are made in mexico. what can you guys tell me about its quality? are they as good as a “real” US build Guild?

talking about those “new” guitars, i can not see (for viewing) a difference between the DV-4 and the D40 Bluegrass Jubilee – except the vintage tuners and the adirondack top on the D40. what else is the difference between those two guitars?

thank you for listening.

regards,
ike

p.s. cannot attach my pic - sorry....

Hello Ike and welcome.
Guild D-25 guitars are great guitars. They came in different builds over the years. Some have a laminated arched back and some have a more traditional flat back. A few had mahogany tops but most had spruce tops.
Post the serial number of your guitar here and you will get more help in identifying it.

As far as where Guild guitars were made goes, It's a personal choice.
I have owned Guilds from Westerly that were pre Fender and I now have a D-55 that was made in Tacoma.

Every place that has made guilds made great guitars.
Likewise there were some not do great guitars made at every factory.
There were more Guilds made in Westerly than any other factory, so you would expect that these people had the time to learn how to do it right.

The best thing that you can do is to play a guitar before you buy it. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
That goes for any manufacture.
The funny thing is that a guitar that I don't like will be the best guitar that someone else ever had.
Everyone had their own opinion about how a guitar should sound and feel.

Your guitar probably has a spruce top with a laminated mahogany back.
Most of the D-25 guitars were made this way.
They are great guitars and have a large following.

hello Taylor Martin Guild!

thank you for your quick answer.
yes, my D25 has an arched back. i am pretty shure that the top is spruce since i really don't think that mahagony does have this type of grain...

he serial# of my D25 is AD 407722 - and the truss rod cover says "True American" (not sure if that helps?).

Let me add my welcome, -ike- . There are a lot of good people on this board. I'm far from an expert on Guild guitars, but the serial number on your guitar suggests it was probably made in the late '90's.

This site:
http://www.westerlyguildguitars.com/

has a lot of great information about the Westerly-built Guild guitars.

The D-25's that have an M on the label indicate that the guitar has a spruce top with a mahogany stain.

I hope you are enjoying the Guild. We'd love to see a photo. Here are the instructions which tell how to post an image on this forum:

hi everybody!!

seems it's a nice crowd here
thank you all for your warm welcome(s) and for the information on dating my loveley D-25 - well, 2000 wasn't a bad year - at least they have made MY Guild that year

in 2000 - which would be the year my D25 was produced, have there been any "costum" specs that one could order with a D25? things like vintage tunres or...?? if so, how would those tuners look like?

could anybody give me an advice on what's the difference between a D-25 and a R.I. made D4? i mean other than the finish... any other changes like braceings or materials or...?

thank you in advance,

Welcome to LTG Ike.

From your "bad English" I thought you were from California.

Enjoy the D-25!
Graham,
As a Citizen of the Great Bear State of California, one might take some serious umbridge with that kind of remark, but because, and only because you're a Citizen of the Great White North and wore the Shackles of Empire from our collective, Colonial Masters a lot longer than we did, I'll let it pass. This time.

BTW, Ike, welcome. A D-25 is a great Guild, and it appears that you might have one of the last ones to come out of Westerly.....before they moved to....California.

Welcome Ike! You've come to the right place.
The D25 has been the starting point for many of us here, so fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride....(and make some room for the upcoming ones  )

Welcome Ike! My first and only Guild for about 25 years was my D-25M, then I bought a '98 DV-52 (After Fender, like yours), and both are exquisite guitars. I happen to think Westerly built some of their best guitars in the last few years of production there, they certainly built a lot of different ones!

Gotta love those arched-back spruce-topped D-25's, killer tone and great bottom end! Enjoy!
