I'm looking at a 1971 D40, 1974 D50 that has had a fret job and a 1975 F50 Jumbo (but I think it's a 1978 serial 179XXX). I used to have a 1991 D25 and loved the tone but sold it to get my Les Paul. Now I have the Guild bug again and I'm not sure which to go after. Right now I'm loving the F50 Jumbo but the price is a hair more than I want to spend. I like the arch backed guitars......they just sound better to me.

Any recommendations? I'm around $1000.00 on each of them except the F50.......closer to $1400 on it.

Thanks!

If you liked a D-25, then that's the easiest answer. Cheaper too. Your aren't going to spend a grand there...

Personally, I like the D 25 arch backs and the D 50 models as well as anything Guild has put out. They won't break the bank either.

Good luck and welcome to LTG

Welcome aboard! Unless you're one of those guys that actually enjoys "the hunt", nail down the one you know you like while you can. Vintage Guilds're on an upswing lately, price-wise.
Is that price firm or do you think they'll "work with you"? Can't hurt to ask.
And of course we're assuming you've been able to evaluate condition on it.
Keep us posted.

First of all, welcome.

Second, you are looking at three great options, each different, even though they are from the same decade and same factory (Westerly, RI).

First, the obvious. The D-40 has a braced, solid mahogany back and sides. The D-50 has a braced, solid rosewood back and sides. Both are dreadnoughts. The D-40 will have a bit warmer tone, the D-50 a bit brighter and chimier.

The F-50 is a completely different animal altogehter. F-bodied jumbo, maple back and sides, laminated, arched back. A flagship guitar for Guild starting in 1953. Blinged to the hilt. With pure, maple tone that rings crisp and true.

If they are all in one place, have someone hand them to you blindfolded, one by one, and strum, and listen. If not, use your phone to record each as you play the same tune then have someone play them all back to you, one by one.

Welcome to LTG Cheab! Totally unsolicited, but buy my awesome D25. It's loaded with mahogany goodness, and is a great guitar that will save you a bunch on your budget.

WELCOME TO LTG!
On the list of Guilds I wish I still had, the '78 D25M is right at the top.
Go for it....you'll be one happy picker and you'll still have a little money left. :friendly_wink:

Welcome to LTG!

You might want to check with member 2nevets. He was selling a pretty nice-looking 70s (I think) F-50 (the maple version) for the kind of money you are talking about. I've bought a couple of guitars from him and will highly recommend.

I am afraid you answered your own question. Looking forward to the pics of the F50. Welcome to the LTG.

Hey Cheab, welcome to LTG! Those are all good options. If you can put your hands on all of them and play them, then go with your heart. My input would be to get what you want despite your budget. Then you're never left wondering why you were so concerned about a few hundred dollars. So go with what your heart desires. Also, either of the two members above that were mentioned have a great reputation on this forum and I'd be happy to deal with them. Not that you were asking for MORE options but ..... this is a guitar forum. We push guitars.... it's what we do. :encouragement:

Thanks for the great welcome and advice! Actually the F50 is listed on here that I was considering. I've always been a Guild guy at heart and will always be. I played a $2400 Taylor and then a $600 D25.........not even close in sound and I bought the Guild. Hmm Sandys D25 has got me thinkin now.........

Looking at their catalog, the vast majority of Taylors come with electronics installed. They would say, I'm sure, that it's a matter of customer demand, but I personally believe it's because they sound so thin unplugged.

Totally agree! Thin and tinny......they sound like junk to me. Love the deep throatiness of a Guild :adoration:

I see in the other thread you have purchased a D-25 from our own Twocorgis. That's probably the best decision you'll make all day. Any more questions? Ha. Cheers!

Seriously. Early D-25's with mahogany tops are jaw-dropping values. I would never part with mine.

i have a 1975 F50, and it is exquisite. you would never go wrong with it, and if it's in really good condition, it's a good price. that number probably is a '78, but the mid 70s are awesome. if i couldn't play a lick, i would buy an F50 just to look at it. have you played it? is it in great shape? i have a '72 D50, and even though it's great, my F50 is my baby. it was also my first Guild
