Hello All;

I've visited from time to time and figured it was about time to join. I've been gassing for a 12-string for the last month or so and finally pulled the trigger on a GAD-G212. I ordered one from Elderly, they had the natural finish in stock but I ordered the antique sunburst. A local GC near me had a GAD-50 in ASB and it looked great so I decided to get the 212 in that color. Not sure how long it will take but rest assured i'll post some photos and a review when it arrives.

I also have a '73 D-40, purchased new (i was 20 years old then, how is that possible!!!) It's in need of a neck reset and new bridge and saddle. Initially I didn't really want to invest so much money to repair it but i'm starting to leans towards having the repair work done. Other than the issues I mentioned, it's in great shape, lots of finish checking (which looks really cool) but no cracks. It has a ton of mojo, the top has darkened and there's a part of me that would hate to part with something I bought new 34 years ago!!

Best
Paul

Welcome to LTG Paul.

If you've been lurking you know that this place can get a little bit goofy at times, mostly it's the older folks trying their hands at the computer technology thing that supplies much of the entertainment but there is also a wealth of knowledge, some of which actually seeps into my thick noggin. Doesn't stay around much though. :shock:

Congrats on the new guitar. Let us know your thoughts when you get the opportunity.

Welcome Paul,

Post some pics of your D 40, most everyone here would love to see her.

Hang around enough & you're sure to get some positive advice about fixing your baby. Myself I'd be leaning towards fixing your baby rather than spending the money buying another, She's sure to play like a dream if you get the right guy to do the work.

Welcome, Paul. I visit Elderly as often as I can, it's like a candy store for grown up kids with GAS.

I'd sure hang onto that D-40. Have you found out exactly what it would cost to refurbish it?

Welcome from another newbie Paul!

I've only been around a few days and have already found a wealth of knowledge among these guys. The new purchase sounds great. Looking forward to some pics when it arrives.

Why yes Jerry, and thanks for noticing. :wink: It's the 10 year, sliding scale, to oldness that I follow.

Hi Paul and welcome; I agree with the sentiments above. If you fix it, it'll be yours for life; if you trade it, the 'discount' will be the equivalent of what it would have cost to fix it - you're going to take the hit no matter what. If you enjoy it that much ....

Regards,

Hey Paul... welcome to LTG! You'll find a lot of characters here, all of whom share a deep affection for guitars Guild and affliction with chronic "GAS."

You and I have a similar beginning story... I have a D-35 (basically, a less ornate D-40) that I bought new in January of '73 (as might be expected, the SN dates it to '72), when I was 17. It's had its share of knocks in life, and shows it. But it will be the last guitar I'll part with (tho' the only way you would get any of my Guilds away from me is to "pry them from my cold dead hands!")... I expect it will pass to one of my daughters when I move on "across the Great Divide."

I think you find LTG a fun and educational... albeit addicting.. place to hang out!

Dave;

Great story!! Yeah, i'm really thinking I'll have my D-40 repaired. My two sons (19 & 23) also play, so any purchase I make has them in mind when I too travel to the next world. They'll inherit some pretty good guitars.

My wife has heard the excuse "but it's really for our kids" so many times she just laughs at me now. I have a Larrivee Parlor that i'm gonna sell, told my wife i'll use the proceeds to buy the GAD-G212 12 string. In a moment of temporary insanity, she said "go ahead, order the 12-string and you don't even have to sell the little guitar" So of course now, i'll sell the Parlor guitar and use that money to fix my D-40!!

Thanks
Paul

I sent an email to Elderly to see if they had any idea when they would be getting in my antique sunburst GAD-G212 and the promptly informed that they are expecting one to arrive around 9/14 (and it will be mine)

So i'm hoping to get this baby in about a week and a half. Will post photos and review when it arrives.

And I will have my '73 D-40 repaired once I sell my Parlor. I think it will be really nice to have a guitar I purchased new in '73 brought back to spec.

Will keep you all posted, thanks again
Paul
