Tonight at the regular Tuesday night open mic at Java Joe's, a young fellow stopped in for the first time with his roommate to make their debut in the neighborhood. The one fellow brought out his Guild F-20-NT from Hoboken. It sounded great! No electronicals - it was acoustic and had to be mic'd. I was very impressed with how well it projected and the overall tone was richer than most small bodied guitars. After their set I introduced myself and asked about his axe. Turns out he got it from his mother who was the original owner. They don't have the original receipt but he believes she got it in the early 60's. He offered to let me play it, which I was happy to do. Another local regular joined me with his Martin all mahogany OM and we jammed through a couple of tunes. The Guild shone through like a star. The young fellow expressed an interest in selling this fine little guitar, and he might be joining the forum here to see if anyone is interested. So keep an eye out for for a newby named Dustin.

I play at least one Open Mic/wk here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

It seems that I almost never see Guild acoustics unless I'm playing in San Francisco, and even then it's pretty rare. Yet folks will come up and ask me about my Guilds as if they're interested in them.

Martin really has this area pretty well covered for the Open Mic scene.

Go figure...

We run into it all the time. No don't get me wrong, there are Martins and Gibsons that are fine guitars. But, just because the brand name is "iconic" doesn't necessarily mean it's worth a crap.
"Oh I'm playing a Martin(Gibson,Taylor, etc)" doesn't tell me anything except it probably cost a lot of money.

I know guys who bought a Martin over a Guild only because the Martin cost more money.
There's a tag-line for someone on this forum that says something like "Guild, More guitar less money" .
Your socks are probably the same socks as I wear but you paid $3.00 more for them because they have the Nike swoosh on the side.

You're right 6, Go Figure?

Our open mics here can be a real eye opener. Some guy who drives in from 40 miles out in the breaks happens in to the club where we're having an open mic.
Borrows my GAD40ce I use for a stage rig and does a bunch of originals that wow us all. Turns out he's been writing for Nashville for 30 years. You'll find his name on the "written by" line of several of Merle Haggard's tunes.

Try living 10- 15 minutes from Nazareth, and playing at a club that had a Martin signature guitar built after it!

But, I'm a fan of Martins too & will never let go of my 000-15 so it could be worse... they could all be playing Taylors!

Though Guilds are fairly rare at this open mic, I often get lots of questions/praise about mine. Especially when took the F112 there last time.

"Twice the Guitar for half the price."
Very well put, Jerry. Quite often and in many ways that is the plain fact. Just look at the comparisons made between the new D and F series traditionals vs the Adirondack topped Martins. In this case it's very much so.

Hard to tell, my subjective ideas aside, which is the better instrument: my ex Martini HD-28 and my current WP Sign at about the same price. Of course the Martin wasn't as loud as one could expect, had more wolfnotes and didn't open up as fast (did it ever?) as the Guild.

Maybe the new Guild marketing section will cotton on - can't use the statement as it stands as challengable under law, but "Some Guild players reckon you get twice the guitar for half the price" might be a good marketing tag  It's OK you guys out there - I'm not after Royalties  ('Course, if you like it, use it, and want to send me a new D55 and present it to me at Arlington 2009  )
