Just saw this in my favorite local mom and pop. Looks like a toy, but I’m guessing it’s not. Sorry about the photos. My new iPhone 12 cuts the top and bottom off I guess. Had the whole bass in the view finder

Well known. Appeared under both the Guild and DeArmond badge with slight differences. Recent thread in Bass about strings. My take is that if you play a full size bass it is at best a novelty and not a usable tool. If you don't then it might be useful but a bass uke seems to fill that niche and is easier to play and maintain.

Search Ashbory for my sources and other discussions.

The first time I ever saw an Ashbory bass was at a David Sylvian show in 1988 with Ian Maidman on bass. I can't find any images from that tour but here's a live audio clip.

Read those discussions and you will learn something about those basses:

And if you have some free time the long story is here: "The story of the Ashbory bass".

You saw a Guild and you didn't buy it? ;]

Man, I'd really like to walk into a guitar store right now, but those days are gone for me.

It only had 4 strings. On the other hand, with less strings I might play better. Is there a 1 string guitar?

Here you go - notice, that there are no frets either - so no worries to hit wrong notes - just see that your rhythm is in time - perfectly suited for one-handed musicians. In rare case that you do have two hands - you might go wild and play two at once - even polyrhythms . . .
