There is also a strong hobby component that is working on "mass market" 3D printers. The goal is to have a printer and a set of instructions that will allow the printer to replicate itself. Last I checked they were about 75% of the way there with a parts and materials cost of about $4000.

There is similar technology that is being used to construct body parts. I seem to recall that a trachea was recently produced and used in a transplant. The research focus is on kidneys because that is the most transplanted organ and they think they are about two years away from being to make a kidney. In the case of body parts the construction material somehow involves cells from the intended recipient so there is no expectation of rejection.
