If you followed my post in another thread you know I was looking at buying a 1981 D25 posted on Craigslist in Long Beach, California. I bought it Saturday morning.

This guitar is in pretty bad shape, but the important stuff like the neck and saddle are in good shape and it plays well with good action.

Here's some pics:

Is this an antique burst or a sun burst?

You can see the pickguard is curling up on the edges one-inch in spots. I don't know what causes this, heat?

The guitar is full of scratches, nicks and dings, with a serious gouge on the lower left face.

There is a crack on the face at the soundhole, I will most likely have this fixed so it doesn't break away:

There is an original Guild sound board transducer with a volume control. This pickup sounds great, very natural, I was surprised, as the technology in 1981 is not what it is today. Who was making these things in those days?

Tuners:

The 4th string tuner is not working well, it is missing the little white rubber washer. I either need to fix this or replace the tuner. Are these even available to purchase, I don't want to have to buy 6 new ones. I may try opening it up and oiling it, we'll see.

I'm pretty happy with this relic, sounds much better than my 1994 D4, although in playing the higher frets there is some intonation issues. I can see why there's so much love for these around here.

That sure looks like a Tobacco Burst like my D25-12

My favorite Guild Burst, along with the Antique Burst.

Good luck with the new addition!

Doesn't matter. Ask Treem. The only real question is to 'burst or not to 'burst. Er, actually, that's not really a question for him.

Yeah, get the worst things fixed but leave the rest. That be some mojo! Enjoy!

BTW, I don't remember ever seeing the "Electric" TRC before. Cool.

The pickguard material shrinks with age.

Some people try using a hair dryer to soften and expand the material and then reglue it.

You can get a replacement pickguard if it bothers you.

Yes, but not all pickguards from 30 year-old guitars are like that (or are they?), doesn't it mean it was exposed to EXCESSIVE heat?

Fred,
Very, very nice....can't wait to play it. The 'Burst is exactly like the one on my '81 D55, very dark on the upper part of the sound hole; can you see a date on the neck block? I like the "G" Shield on the volume knob....gives it that custom factory look.

Does this mean you're going to plug it in in Sylmar, a la Mr. B. King and make us all play '20s Show Tunes???

Great catch.

It's alright, but it'd be better if you swapped that 30 year old Guild case for a generic 2 or so years new case. I just happen to have one I'd sacrifice in exchange for one like yours.(hint, hint!)

Congrats! Just gave my old D-25 a bunch of play time last weekend, gotta love those spruce top arch backs! And a 'burst too! :D

Same old scarlet lined Guild case as mine too, stock # 2520.

That my friend is one of the nicest 'bursts and dare I say it the nicest Guilds I've ever seen. I'm a less is more man, not a fan of bling on guitars. I'd drop a compensated bone saddle in there to sort out the intonation issues, get a nylon washer for the machine head and then go and play that sucker!!!!!!

hi Fred:

It's very similar to my '82. Mine is a sunburst - it says "D25SB" on the label (that's how I know it's a sunburst) Mine's slightly darker; the central burst is smaller in area.

I really like your built-in pickup. I've never seen one like that before. It's obviously factory-installed. Does it require a battery? I also like the "Electric" truss rod cover.

I've had mine since '83, and enjoyed every minute. I hope that you get lots of satisfaction out of yours.

No, it does not require a battery, which is great. I guess the closest thing I could compare it to is the K&K SBT, that also is very hot and does not require a battery. It, however, does not have that handy volume control.
