Hello and please allow my introduction to the group.

My interest in Guild guitars heralds back to 1978 when I bought two new Guild guitars from Silverton Music, NJ USA: a jumbo acoustic and a small electric hollow body. It's sad that I completely forgot their model numbers - more so that I sold them back to the dealer a year later. I played sporadically through the years and recently, I made the decision to play more seriously. Several years ago
I aquired a Fender Roadhouse Stratocaster. This was to replace the Stratocaster I purchased around the same time as the Guilds, and yes, like the Guilds, sold a short time later.

In keeping with my rock and roll/blues roots, the Stratocaster seemed a logical choice of guitar to aquire. I enjoy playing it, but I was always had a keen interest in jazz music. Back in the late seventies, it was primarily jazz fusion that I listened to. In recent years, I have listened to Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrel, Joe Pass, Pat Metheney ... you get the idea. To find a softer sound and emulate the "jazz sound," I purchased an Epiphone Emperor II and an ES-175 copy. They are great values for the money - in particular the ES-175 copy.

However, I've always longed to own a Guild again. Also, I secretly desired an instrument that was domestically made. The Statocaster fit that need, the Epiphones did not. For my budget, the Gibson
jazz boxes are prohibitively expensive. I have recently learned that Guilds are a tremendous value for an American made guitar - underrated even. Sadly, I also learned that Guild was aquired by Fender, built a few guitars from their California facility and esentially dicontinued American made Guild electric guitars altogether.

Recently, I was toying with the idea of buying an X-170 in exceleent condition on E-Bay. In my research of Guild electric guitars on the Internet, I found this forum. Like most other forums, it is a great source of information and comradeship. I look forward to being a member and contributing to this fine group.

Sincerely,

Alex Robatto
PS. I did buy the X-170! Would anyone be able to date the serial number AK171510?

Steve,

I plan on playing it through an Epihone Valve Junior Half Stack - modified using Bitmo's Trio mod. It works great with my Epi ES-175. However, I haven't done that yet due to a sudden retinal detachment - damn!! I hope to play it this weekend. I'll use D'Addario flatwound chromes 11-50. I love the way they feel!

Hmm, 2001. Would that be the last year it was manufactured in Rhode Island? That's the address on the sticker.

Hi Guys, I am fairly new to this site also but woud trust Hans' input, I had previously dated my Guild S-100 as a 73 and i checked out all online data but all the Guild adds did not reflect the same model for that year and i believe Hans gave me not only the correct answer to that question but also supplied a part that was missing as well as details on original machine heads and the replacements that were on it ...not to mention the fact the washers on the replacements were on the wrong way (still think they look great)...

DANE ... pickguard looks very similar to one you mentioned in other thread, shape i mean font and star in different position though.

They changed that around the time they switched from Hoboken to Westerly.

Welcome aboard, Guilderagain!
Beautiful guitar! I was looking at one very similar on eBay, but tax refunds haven't arrived yet.
Sorry to hear about your eye! Keep us posted on your recovery. We might not be able to heal it, but we can crack jokes about it and hope you have a good sense of humor/humour. Has something to do with laughter and medicine. Maybe.

If you make any recordings with that new X-170, please post them somewhere for us to hear!

Post well. Post often.

Next time I get out to the store, I'll try some of those chromes. The flats I tried last didn't do it for me.

Guildmark,

Thanks for the well wishes. Yep, I can take a joke! If Oscar Peterson recovered from a stoke in 1993 after 2 years, then this is a walk in the park. Recording ... ah ... I haven't recorded anything since I sang Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer as a kid on a reel to reel. Cripes! Gona have to practice hard and often, gulp!

Micahael,

Ah Germany! I was in the Muenster area for 2 weeks in February of 2005. I'll hope to go back again. Perhaps Berlin would be a nice hot spot to visit!

Default,

The D'Addario chromes have been described as silky/buttery smooth. I would agree. I tried playing my Stratocaster (using roundwound Slinkys) after playing the flatwounds for months. Good God! It was like running my fingers down a rat tail file! Man did I get soft on the flatwounds!
